In 1939 Poland had only two motorised brigades: the 10th Cavalry Brigade (10.BK - Brygada Kawalerii) of Col. Maczek, and hastily organized in August-September 1939, 
Warsaw Armoured-Motorised Brigade (Warszawska Brygada Pancerno-Motorowa - WBP-M) of Col. Grot-Rowecki.*

The 10th Cavalry Brigade entered combat on 1 September 1939, defending positions in Beskid Mountains, near Jordanow. For the next 13 days, the Brigade was almost constantly in contact with enemy, acting in delay. From 14 September it fought at Zboiska village near Lviv, but finally was ordered to withdraw to Hungary on 19 September.*

The WBP-M was protecting Vistula line near Lublin and Krasnik, and on 8 September it had the first contact with an enemy. After absorbing remains of several other armoured units,
it fought a two-day battle of Tomaszow Lubelski on 18-19 September, after which it had to surrender. *

Each brigade consited of:*
- two motorized cavalry regiments,*
- reconnaissance detachment (including a tankette squadron),*
- light tank company (Vickers E tanks),*
- tankette company,*
- anti-tank detachment,*
- motorised artillery detachment,*
- sapper battalion,* 
- AA battery*
