Historical Background: General MacArthur's invasion of Inchon has routed the North Korean army to the border of China. Three Marine Regimental Combat Teams advanced towards the Yalu, east of Changji (Japanese, pronounced CHOSIN by US forces) while 8th Army units took up positions on the Yalu west of Chosin. The RCT-7 seized Hagaru-ri and under order advanced to Yudam-ni (14 miles), while the RCT-1 took Huksu-ri and RCT-5 protected the main supply route from Yudam-ni to Majon-dong, a total distance of 55 miles.*

As the Chinese saw it*
*
Xie Fang, Chinese chief of staff, assessed the situation as of 15th November as such. The 9th army group successfully entered Korea fron J'lan and Linjang with 150, 000 men, facing them was an enemy force of 90,000 men (USMC), a 1.66 advantage for him. In the west over 250,000 Chinese troops were faced by 130,000 enemies, an advantage of 1.75 for him. The Chinese forces were superior to the enemy on both the east and western fronts.*
*
Chinese Tactics: The Chinese tactics, unlike that of myth and which was reported by Allied forces, was not a human wave attack but for successive small groups of 50 to 100 men to pound on a specific spot until a breakthrough was achieved; this breakthrough would then be exploited by following companies of infantry. This form of attack was called the "short attack" and resembled the German storm trooper attacks of WW1.*

Yudam-ni*
*
As darkness fell on the 27th Captain Wilcox's Company B, 7th Marines was heavily attacked on the south ridge by Chinese forces. Under intense pressure Lieutenant Colonel Davis, commander of 1st Battalion, led Charlie Company, less one platoon, to the aide of B Company. B Company was eventually able to disengage and pull itself back to Yudam-ni while C company took over its positions.*
*
Unknown to the Marines, they were nearly completely surrounded by the 79th and 81st CCF (Chinese Communist Forces) divisions. At 2200 hours the 89th CCF division began its attack on the Northwest Ridge with two regiments, the 266th and 267th. Groups of 50 to 100 Chinese soldiers attacked the perimeter. Concurrently on the North Ridge the 79th CCF with three regiments attacked the Marine positions in column of battalions. The battle raged throughout the -20 fahrenheit night until dawn when the Chinese forces disengaged and pulled back to their covered positions from which they had launched the attacks. While the CCF had overrun many of the positions they were unable to hold them from determined counter attacks by small groups of Marines and the artillery fire of three batteries of 105mm and three of 155mm (although there were 36 tubes in all supporting the Marines their fire was spread over a very large area, weakening it).*
*
Chinese attacks continued south of Yudam-ni at Hagaru-ri and Koto-ri which threatened to cut off and encircle the Marines at Yudam-ni. On the 30th of November the Marines, under long range small arms fire, formed up and began to march south to Hagaru-ri and away from Chosin to prevent being encircled.*

Game Notes*
*
USMC off map artillery will have reduced ammo loads and reduced unit cost. The reduced ammo load is to represent the numerous wide spread fire missions the two batteries were tasked with*
*
Visibility of 2 is to represent the numerous flares both sides utilized during the night battle.*
*
Guide to unit ID. USMC: 1/E/2/7 represents 1st platoon/Easy company/2nd battalion/7th Marine regiment. CCF: HQ/1/3/236/79 represents Headquarters/1st company/3rd battalion/236th regiment/79th division.*

The three books I read all contain text regarding the heavy Chinese MG fire that swept the USMC positions, since it was night and Marines talked about "bumping" into Chinese on their position one can only surmise that the MG fire was area (Z) fire. It is suggested that Z fire for MGs be allowed without restriction to simulate this if players normally play with 'Z' fire restriction.*
