February 22nd, 1945*
At the bank of the Roer, West of Juelich*
*
After two solid months of rest with limited action, our offensive into the heart of Germany is about to resume.
The crossing of the Roer river has been assigned to the 175th Regiment. Or maybe you want the glory for your own unit?
*
*
Advance parties of engineers and infantry have already crossed the river in boats last night and established themselves on the other side.
Due to the high banks of the river in our sector, a major assault in boats has been judged impossible.
Instead, the engineers have prepared foot bridges (shallow sections marked by a "=" symbol ingame) that our infantry will use to storm across.
The main objectives in Juelich for the first day are the train station and the citadel.
*
*
Objectives: *
Deploy the battalion from 175th Regiment in the indicated area and your core force in reserve.*
Alternatively, switch the units around for a "what-if"-scenario.*
Cross the Roer using the foot bridges.*
Seize the citadel and the trainstation.*
Destroy the citadel main entrance to force the Germans inside to surrender.*
*
*
Enemy: We are still facing the 363rd Volksgrenadier Division that delayed us for so long at the Sportplatz and Gut Hasenfeld.
However, a recent increase in deserters indicates that the failure of their big offensive might have had an effect on German morale.
Also, the super heavy artillery that protected the town has been used up during the Ardennes offensive, so the enemy will have to rely on divisional artillery.
They might still have some SP guns in support.*
*
*
The more seasoned soldiers of the division still remember the amazing effect of the British Crocodile tanks on a similar citadel near Brest.
Consequently, 4 brand new American made Sherman Crocodiles have been assigned the task of reducing it.
You will receive barge carriers (representing the engineers building sturdier bridges) in order to transport them across the river.
The operation will be well supported: In fact, the opening barrage will be the heaviest of the war so far and many of the guns will still be on call for you to use later.
*
*
You will receive no reinforcements until after the battles around Juelich. Historical note: In reality, the assault was made by 175th regiment, but you can use your own core unit instead, if you want.
