(1) GM: And you're outside the rather paranoid fortress.

(1) GM: And a black blotch passes along the ground in front of the party....

(2) Kibin: That black blob looks familiar...

(1) GM: Anyway, the town seems rather happy. Most businesses cheerily continue, there are vendors selling fruit on the street, construction blithly continuing on the aqueducts, despite the fact that the new pumps won't be delivererd, and there won't be enough water for the extra capacity.....
(1) GM: One shop is closed, though, although activity appears to go on inside apace.
(1) GM: Seems the curator's not in today....
** (3) Kaylin looks around admiring the city. **
(1) GM: You see one person selling oddly colored candles.
(2) Kibin: My family is probably wondering where I've been all this time...
(3) Kaylin: "Amazing, I'd never consciously realised you had family before."
(4) Katsuro: "...I send letters home."
(1) GM: Jason: What, you think he was spawned from the rocks themselves? It's not like he's an elemental.
(4) Katsuro: "In which case, he'd have rocks for a family."
(3) Kaylin: "I haven't been gone from my usual lair long enough for anyone to worry."
(3) Kaylin: "Well, anyone have any suggestions on what to do now? If not, I can always spend some time refreshing my knowledge of local history."
(2) Kibin: Nothing at the moment we really need to do...
(4) Katsuro: "I need to find a new quest."
(1) GM: Jason: Hmm... yes, everone does need a purpose in life.
(2) Kibin: (Wouldn't a pledge to assist us be okay enough?)
(1) GM: (Has to be highly specific)
(4) Katsuro: (Yeah. Something like that could get him thrown out.)
(3) Kaylin: "Purpose can be good, yes. Weighs more heavily on some than others."
(2) Kibin: (An ideal or princible that you uphold is perfectly okay.)
(2) Kibin: (Principle*)
(1) GM: (For a Cleric - Katsuro needs a specific quest, on the other hand - slay a particular ruler or Demon Lord, works, Fight Evil doesn't.)
(2) Kibin: ("Typical oaths include swearing service to a powerful lord of the kensai's alignment, to an organization with the same alignment and goals of the kensai, to the kensai's deity, or even to an ideal or principle the kensai upholds.")
(1) GM: (Ah.)
(2) Kibin: (Fight evil doesn't work, because it's too broad, falls under the broad oaths or ones deliberatly easy to fulfill.)
(1) GM: Anyway....
(4) Katsuro: (What sort of ideal or principle would be specific enough? *Scratches head*)
(2) Kibin: (But there's still 9 weeks left or so.)
(1) GM: Back after breakfast
(2) Kibin: (Depends. What do you want Katsuro to do?)
(4) Katsuro: (...Fight evil...)
(2) Kibin: (You could have your principle be the definition of exalted. Means never justify the ends, never associate willingly with evil, protect innocents always at all costs...)
(2) Kibin: (I'm happy being regular lawful good with no oaths or restrictions, heh.)
(2) Kibin: (Maybe something related to the reason you became a kensai in the first place...)
(2) Kibin: (Support religious freedom, and oppose those who pose a threat to organized religion for true dieties?)
(4) Katsuro: (Has to be an oath that keeps him with the party.)
(2) Kibin: (Borrow the paladins code?)
(2) Kibin: (Or possibly find a lawful good lord to pledge loyalty to... though don't know which one that would be. Paranoid king here probably wouldn't be a good idea.)

(4) Katsuro: (Since he's rebelling against an usurper, he doesn't break the lawfull requirement...Depending on the legend.)

(2) Kibin: (Yeah, but that's still disregard for lawfulness.)
(4) Katsuro: (No - A Lawfull Good character can fight an unlawfull ruler.)
(4) Katsuro: (Either because he's evil or because his rule breaks the law.)
(2) Kibin: (What if he's a lawful evil ruler?)
(4) Katsuro: (Depends. If he doesn't break the law and isn't masecaring people, then not with violence.)

(1) GM: Anyway... what's everyone doing?
** (2) Kibin goes look at the oddly colored candles. **
(1) GM: Candle Maker: Ah, I see you're looking at my wares. You have a sense of magic, I can tell.
(4) Katsuro: (Sukabait!)
(2) Kibin: Hmmmm?
** (3) Kaylin eyes Kibin looking over candles **
(4) Katsuro: (Pronounce it phonetically...)
(1) GM: Candle Maker: Why, my candles are magical! This clearish one will make the lighter invisible for about half a minute, unless someone blows it out.
(2) Kibin: (That was IC. :P)
(1) GM: Candle Maker: This brownish one will make the lighter more dextrous for a time.
(1) GM: Candle Maker: I have quite a few. Is there any effect in particular you're interested in?
(2) Kibin: Not really, just looking around.
(1) GM: Candle Maker: Nobody ever buys my magical candles....
(1) GM: The candle maker pulls out a clearish one, lights it, and vanishes from view when the flam starts melting the wax.....
(1) GM: You then watch as the candles are picked up, one by one, and dropped into an invisible sack, vanishing from view.
(1) GM: The table folds up and follows.
** (2) Kibin hmmms, never saw a walking table before... **
(1) GM: Just the one candle is left, burning for about five minutes before it runs out of wax.
(1) GM: When it does, no trace of the candle maker is found. Other than the burned-out stub of the candle he left running.
(3) Kaylin: "Impressive. What did you say to him?"
** (2) Kibin walks back to the group, saying, "Just that I was just looking at the candles..." **
whispering to Kibin, You did, however, "see" him walk away invisibly with your Blindsense
(3) Kaylin: "Strange."
(4) Katsuro: "Hmm, yes, but probably not something we need to worry about."
(3) Kaylin: "Not unless you want to embark upon a quest to defend the honor and sales of candlemakers."
(1) GM: The sun starts to set.
(4) Katsuro: "I do not think I am particularly suited for that role. For one thing, I'm not a member of any candlemakers' guild."
(1) GM: Many people head off to what appears to be a local tavern.
(3) Kaylin: "Perhaps we should secure lodging and think about what to do tomorrow?"
(2) Kibin: Sure...
(2) Kibin: (*probably should actually write a backstory now*)
(4) Katsuro: "Certainly. There's probably vagrancy laws."
(4) Katsuro: (Heh...I didn't have one for whatsisname, either. The paladin I played...)
(3) Kaylin: (Derrel?)
(4) Katsuro: (Right, thanks. Bad memory.)
** (4) Katsuro heads off towards any nearby inn that looks clean and not full. **
(3) Kaylin: (Backstory would be good, yes...)
** (3) Kaylin follows Katsuro, trusting his guidance to clean inns. **
** (2) Kibin follows, as to not be attacked randomly by demons like last time. **
(1) GM: The inside of the inn is a bit smoky from lamp oil. The place is clean, with fresh thresh on the floor. A fire burns cheerily in an upraised stone firepit, in the middle of the room, with an iron funnel overhead channeling most the smoke out.
(2) Kibin: (Pounddale is a good name for a town...)
(1) GM: The inkeeper is a jolly fat little gnome, walking around on a raised platform behind the bar.
(1) GM: The inn is sized for medium critters, although there are tall stools at the bar with ladders on the side for ease of climbing.
(1) GM: A half-orc tends the fire.
(1) GM: There's a few reasonably solid wooden doors in the back.
(1) GM: The inkeeper greets you warmly from his perch.
(2) Kibin: Inn seems a little large for a gnome to be owning it...
(1) GM: Inkeeper: Welcome! Care to buy a drink?
(3) Kaylin: "I'm just looking for lodging. Do you have a room large enough for us open?"
(1) GM: Inkeeper: Yep. Most my patrons are your size.
(4) Katsuro: "Do you have anything that's served hot?"
(2) Kibin: Don't you mean the rest of my party's size?
(1) GM: The inkeeper grins: Quite a few. Do you preferred mulled cider, stew, or something more substantial?
(4) Katsuro: "Mulled cider and stew sounds about perfect right now."
(1) GM: Gnome: Well, yes. But even young dragons like yourself have a lot of stature.
(3) Kaylin: "Stew sounds excellent right now, you're right. I'd like a bowl too."
(1) GM: The Gnome bows, and taps a series of bells under the bar; it makes quite the musical tune.
** (4) Katsuro bows appropriatly back **
(1) GM: A few moments later, a fair-skinned, clear-complexioned human woman with a little gray around her temples walks in with a large pot floating behind her, carrying a few cups, bowls, and a pitcher that steams.
(2) Kibin: Interesting way of communicating...

(1) GM: Woman: So, how many bowls of stew and cider was that? I can never quite keep those notes straight.....
(3) Kaylin: "One stew for me, and I think Katsuro there would like a stew and a mulled cider."
(4) Katsuro: "One of each for me, thanks."
(1) GM: Meanwhile, the woman sets out a few bowls and mugs, looking ready to ladel out what's needed.
(1) GM: Woman: All right, that will be three silvers, four coppers from the hunk, three silvers from the competition.
** (3) Kaylin laughs, "I'm no competition." **
** (3) Kaylin digs out three silvers and hands them over before getting started on the stew. **
** (4) Katsuro laughs and pays. **
(1) GM: The lady smiles, dishes out the food and drink, and heads back into the kitchen.
** (4) Katsuro eats, alternating stew and cider. **
** (2) Kibin isn't that hungry and waits for the rest of the party to finish eating. **
(1) GM: The stew is quite good consisting, mostly of potatoes, carrots, and peas, with some meat for flavor.
(1) GM: The cider is apple, and only slightly alchoholic.
(4) Katsuro: (I might occasionally be occupied; I entered a character arena game on a forum yesterday.)
(4) Katsuro: (The sort of thing Katsuro gew up on...)
** (3) Kaylin finishes. "Good stew, thank you. Now, about that room...?" **
(1) GM: After a while, you finish your meal. There are a couple other patrons, and one man in full plate (minus the helm and gauntlets), who eats his fill but isn't charged. Mostly, though, the place seems a bit empty.
(4) Katsuro: (My Worldwalker (original concept, original universe) is fighting a weakened Fenris.)
(2) Kibin: (I need a random halfling name.)
** (4) Katsuro finishes eating and walks up to the innkeeper. **
(4) Katsuro: (Burris Farmfoot)
(4) Katsuro: "How much for a room for all of us?"
(1) GM: Gnome: Ah yes, I will let the lovely lady know you enjoy her stock. It's 2 gold crowns to rent a room for the night. Five silvers for a cot by the fire, two silvers for a blanket by the fire.
(1) GM: Gnome: Avoiding the vagrancy laws is included, of course.
(1) GM: Gnome: I can bring extra beds into the same room, if you like, at a silver per.
(4) Katsuro: "Hmm, yes, by the way people moved off the street, I thought there was something like that."
(4) Katsuro: "How many rooms do you have open?"
(4) Katsuro: (I presume the sun has set?)
(1) GM: Yes, it was in process when you came inside, and had a decent meal.
(1) GM: Gnome: Three private rooms available. For some odd reason, many people don't take me seriously.
(1) GM: You notice there's only four doors in the back of the inn - one of which is the one the cook used.
(2) Kibin: Uh. Where do you live?
(4) Katsuro: "Hmm...Well, that divides nicely into one each."
(3) Kaylin: "What about Elorin?"
** (2) Kibin nudges Katsuro, and points to Elorin. **
(1) GM: Gnome: Me? Oh, I have a cot under the bar. I'd sleep in my room off the kitchen, but not everything the lady of the establishment cooks up is fit for mortals like myself.
(4) Katsuro: "Oh, right. He was so quiet I forgot he was there. Sorry, Elorin."
(1) GM: Elorin: Nothing to be loud about yet.
(1) GM: Gnome: The thug tending the fire doesn't seem to mind the occasional smell, though, so....
(1) GM: The gnome shrugs.
(2) Kibin: I don't need a room to sleep in if all of you want a room by yourself...
(1) GM: The half-orc growls briefly, then gets up, grabs his axe, and steps out through the kitchen.
(1) GM: You hear a few short whaps, and a moment later, the half-orc comes back in, carrying quite the stack of freshly-split wood.
** (3) Kaylin steps back a bit but otherwise quietly watches **
whispering to Katsuro, You notice that it's a very masterfully crafted greataxe he's using for chopping wood.... and it bears the marks of heavy use and good care.
(3) Kaylin: "So, any consensus on room count?"
(1) GM: The Gnome starts absent-mindedly playing on his bells.
(4) Katsuro: "I would be willing to either take a room or sleep by the fire, depending."
(1) GM: Will saves, everyone.

(1) GM: Kibin?

(1) GM: You can't help but watch as the Gnome plays on his bells.

(1) GM: You all feel a slight buzzing in the back of your heads as the bard suggests renting all three of his rooms, but shake it off easily enough. You still spend well over an hour watching him play, though.
** (2) Kibin thinks he knows why people don't tend to come to his tavern often... **
(4) Katsuro: (Er, do we know someone messed with our minds?)
(1) GM: The man in armor just looks askance at the Gnome with one eye while sipping his cider the entire time.
whispering to Katsuro, You know you shook off something attempting to influence your thoughts, yes.
(1) GM: Oh, and Kaylin - Spellcraft check?
(3) Kaylin: "Excellent performance, that was quite captivating."
(3) Kaylin: Spellcraft Skill Check: [1d20+38] -> [16,38] = (54)
whispering to Kaylin, You recognized the Bardic Mass Suggestion when you shook it off.
** (2) Kibin blinks, confused as to why he spent an hour listening. **
** (3) Kaylin murmurs, "Truly captivating..." **
whispering to Kaylin, You were too Fascinated to do anything about it at the time, though....
(3) Kaylin: "It's getting late, and I for one will need rest. Two rooms should take care of our needs, right?"
(1) GM: Elorin: One for the lady, one for the menfolk?
(4) Katsuro: "Would work."
(1) GM: The Gnome looks mildly disapointed.
(1) GM: Gnome: Well, that's four golds. Would you like some extra beds?
(3) Kaylin: "I'll be fine without."
** (3) Kaylin hands the gnome 2 gold crowns. **
(2) Kibin: (This now has backstory, yay!)
(2) Kibin: Me too...
(1) GM: The gnome hand Kaylin a key.
(4) Katsuro: "It's more comfortable than sleeping on the floor."
(1) GM: Gnome: Sleep well.
** (4) Katsuro pays for the other room and any nessasary bed additions. **
** (3) Kaylin locks the door behind her and begins her daily meditation. **
(1) GM: The gnome takes the money, hands Katsuro a key, and directs the Half-orc to fetch an extra bed (for Elorin).
(2) Kibin: Perhaps, but I don't want to be replacing a bed if I have any bad dreams.
(1) GM: Jason just stays our of sight.
(1) GM: The night passes uneventfully.
(1) GM: The next morning, Elorin prepares his normal Feast.
(1) GM: Curiously, the Gnome, half-orc, cook, and the armored man don't join in. They look like they've already eaten equally well.
** (3) Kaylin asks the gnome, "Already ate?" **
(1) GM: Gnome: Yep. Had a similar Feast myself not too long ago.
(1) GM: Gnome: Habit from my youth.
(3) Kaylin: "Ah, I see."
(2) Kibin: (Kibin hnow has a backstory before he joined the party, yay.)
** (2) Kibin leaves the inn, seeing as there's no more reason to stay in there. **
(1) GM: Outside, it's morning. The sun is just beginning to rise, and long shadows leave the street itself covered in shade.
** (3) Kaylin finishes, bids the innkeeper goodbye, and also walks outside. **
(1) GM: There's hardly a cloud in the sky; it looks to be a beautiful day. Many people are busily setting up shops.
** (4) Katsuro thanks the innkeeper for his hospitality and leaves. **
(1) GM: You don't see the candle maker again today.
(3) Kaylin: "So... back to debating what to do next?"
(1) GM: You hear noises from the pump crafting place.
(1) GM: Oddly, it's open.
** (2) Kibin glances over to the pump crafting place, suggesting, "See what's going on over there again?" **
(3) Kaylin: "Might as well."
** (3) Kaylin wanders over to take a peek at the action **
** (2) Kibin follows. **
** (4) Katsuro wanders over to take a look. **
(1) GM: The place has a sign that says "under new management" and there's someone else directing all the work.
(1) GM: Same crew, though, going through the same motions.....
** (3) Kaylin sighs. **
(4) Katsuro: (/me takes that exercise wheel for a spin...)
(4) Katsuro: "More zombie dogs?"
(2) Kibin: Could be that the illusion was programmed to continue... if that is an illusion.
(4) Katsuro: "...More clones?..."
** (3) Kaylin walks over to one of the workers that was illusionary yesterday, "Any chance of talking to the new manager?" **
(1) GM: The man glances at you briefly, grunts, and points towards the office. The same one with the paper floor, earlier, then quickly gets back to work.
(3) Kaylin: "well, nothing for it..."
(2) Kibin: They're illusions, what do you expect. An intelligent conversation?
** (3) Kaylin walks over to the door, opens it, and pokes the floor with her staff. **
(1) GM: The floor is solid this time.
** (3) Kaylin pokes a little harder, to be more sure. **
(1) GM: It shifts only very slightly.
** (2) Kibin walks forward on the floor, throwing caution to the wind. **
(1) GM: And the floor supports the small dragon's weight.
(1) GM: Inside the office, you see a young, freshly shaven man sitting behind the desk.
(1) GM: He's blond.
** (4) Katsuro follows. **
(1) GM: Blonde Man: Ah, welcome! Here to rent a motor?
(3) Kaylin: "Actually, I was curious what happened to the old management."
(1) GM: Blonde Man: That's a private matter.
** (2) Kibin looks around, for signs of hidden doors or things that are going to explode or anything like that... **
(2) Kibin: Search Skill Check: [1d20+23] -> [9,23] = (32)
(3) Kaylin: "Oh. All right."
whispering to Kibin, You're pretty sure there's a lever under the desk that could make the floor fall out from under you. The chair the young man is sitting in seems attached to the wall....
(4) Katsuro: "Well, mostly we're wondering if you're using zombie dogs like the old management."

Seeing as you don't wear a shield most the time anyway.....

(3) Kaylin: (almost 3:00... in about 30 minutes I gotta leave for about 35 minutes to go take care of a neighbor's house while they're gone...)
(1) GM: (Feed the cat and such? Good neighbor.)

(1) GM: You notice a couple of guards and several other people staring at Kaylin, presumeably looking to see if there will be another show.

(1) GM: Jason steps up to Kaylin, and casts a spell....

(2) Kibin: And that likes to eat metal, apparently....

(1) GM: A horse and cart starts coming down the street, aiming for the "empty" section of road.

(1) GM: One of the guards, pointing at two of the others: You and you - go report. We have a vanishing Red on the loose. No telling where it will strike next.
(1) GM: Kaylin's actually got a semi-respectable wisdom score.
(2) Kibin: Look, it's a friend! She's not going to do anything! She's a wizard, using a spell to shapeshift.
(1) GM: The two guards pointed at run off in different directions.
(2) Kibin: She probably vanished because the shapeshifted into something invisible...
(1) GM: Guard: So of course, the first thing she does is turn into something designed to cause terror in the middle of a crowded street? Right.
(4) Katsuro: "Like I said, not too blessed with wisdom."
(2) Kibin: Actually she was a metal eating thing before that, but she wanted some privacy I think.
(1) GM: Guard: You say you're an accomplice? Handy. Now we have someone to arrest.
(1) GM: The guard reaches for you.....
(4) Katsuro: "On what charges? Being shot at by the guards?"

(1) GM: The two remaining guards tie up Kibin and Katsuro (the only PC's currently visible.....) and start hauling them off. Wherein you're both promptly thrown into a bare stone cell, with a familiar grain of rock.

(1) GM: You're handed some rather stale bread and an old waterskin. There's a pile of straw to make a bed from. Looks like it was changed just recently.

(2) Kibin: (I'm guessing they confiscated all items, so I can't just pop etheral and get out of there?)
(1) GM: They took obvious weapons, but it's the same grain of rock in the King's guest rooms.
(2) Kibin: (Antimagic?)
(1) GM: Yep. Your scales are screeching at you quietly. The vibration is slighly unnerving.
** (2) Kibin hmmms, wondering quietly, "I wonder if this particular rock has antimagical properties..." **
(1) GM: Several hours later, the a guard comes by to relieve the one that watches the area.
(1) GM: He talks to you, as well as tossing some more stale bread and other waterskin through the bars
(1) GM: Guard: Good news! Your trial is in a week. I'm sure things would go much better if we could find that dragon friend of yours, but we've got enough witnesses - in the Guard, no less - to get a conviction.
(1) GM: Guard: The better news, for you, anyway, is that nobody was killed. Looks like you'll probably just get a year of labor. Less, if some suitably dangerous service is required.
(2) Kibin: Could I wait until then in a cell that has less antimagic at least?
(1) GM: Guard: Sorry, we're under orders; anyone who so much as notices the antimagic qualities needs to be in there. 'Sides, the King is raving paranoid. The whole place is made of the stuff.
(2) Kibin: Great...
(1) GM: Guard: Just be thankful the charges didn't warrent stoning as a safety measure.
(1) GM: The guard, having said his piece, takes his seat and relaxes into an eight hour watch. He seems very attentive.
** (2) Kibin tries getting some sleep until then... **
(1) GM: So no escape attempts?
(1) GM: Kibin - make a Fort save.
(2) Kibin: (Lawful, not going to break out of jail randomly.)

(1) GM: The guards, having something of pity on him, bring him a hot steaming bowl of Chicken Soup, as well as two winter blankets.

(1) GM: In addition to the normal fare of bread and water.
** (2) Kibin asks the guards, "Does the trial room have an antimagic field?" **
(1) GM: Guard: No idea. I just watch the prisoners.
(1) GM: Guard: Although they do clap everyone in irons when they're taken to see the judge.
(2) Kibin: Can I be stoned then instead of staying in here any longer?
(1) GM: Guard: You want to be....?!?! Okay. I've decided you're an escape risk. If you'll hold a moment....
(1) GM: The guard pulls on a rope under his desk, and you hear a bell ring. A moment later, three burly guards come in.
(3) Kaylin: (Back, and it looks like I really managed to screw things up ... :()
(1) GM: Guard at desk: I've decided the little dragon is an escape risk.
(1) GM: Others: Right.
(4) Katsuro: (Yes. The next time you shapechange in a city, CHANGE INTO SOMETHING HARMLESS!!!)
(1) GM: The guards pull out a set of irons, look at each other, then pull out a smaller set. They then attempt to put Kibin in them.
** (2) Kibin does so willingly... **
(3) Kaylin: (that was harmless! I wasn't going to do anything....)
(3) Kaylin: (there was a distinct lack of firebreathing)
(2) Kibin: (You were threatening?)
(1) GM: Well, let's see.... you turned into a type of critter that's CE, and flew over the crowd with the apparent intent to scare everyone away. In full sight of the guards (who had been mentioned previously) as watching.
(4) Katsuro: (Red dragons are not welcome in populated areas, for the same reason that rabid wolverines aren't.)
(3) Kaylin: (yeah, sequence of really bad ideas>..)
(1) GM: (Under a lot of stress....)

whispering to Kaylin, The good news is that you did eventally manage to retrieve your things, and you just landed a contract from the guard to Stone a prisoner that's listed as an escape risk..... interested in accepting it?
(3) Kaylin (whispering): Er, what? I don't have Flesh to Stone prepared, do I?
(2) Kibin: (And I guess I am stoned without problems, and no longer have to worry about slowly dying because of the antimagic field?)

(3) Kaylin (whispering): oh, I see. Probably best to be co-operative, then, so I'd accept the contract.
(1) GM: Kibin, you're shackled, and brought out into a courtyard... where Kaylin sits waiting, surrounded by guards.
(1) GM: Guard: Here's the prisoner, Ma'am. Do you're thing.
(3) Kaylin: (does he look ill at all?)
** (2) Kibin thinks, "What the heck?" **
(1) GM: Yes, very, although a little shine is coming back into his scales now that he's in the open air.
(3) Kaylin: "He looks very... damaged. Has someone been maltreating him?"
(3) Kaylin: "For that matter, I'm doubting how well he'll survive being de-stoned..."
(1) GM: Guards: No m'am, he just took ill. When we noticed, we got him a bowl of chicken soup and some extra blankets, then he actually requested this, odd as it sounds.
(2) Kibin: No, it's just the antimagic field thats making me sick...
(3) Kaylin: "You put him in an antimagic field?!"

(1) GM: Guards: Standard policy, M'am. The hole jail's full of it. Some mage's cause trouble, and we can hardly be expected to contain a Wizard without such.
(3) Kaylin: (any laws here against cruel treatment of prisoners?)
whispering to Kaylin, Deliberate senseless beatings and such, yes (although punishment for escape attempts leaves a door open if need be for some rather rough treatment); against being thrown in Jail? Not so much.
(1) GM: Guard: You wouldn't believe how expensive that rock is. Still, the King spares no expense on the safety of his subjects.
(3) Kaylin (whispering): Anything that'd cover the case of the jail being physically debilitating?
(3) Kaylin: "I've noticed that myself, yes."
whispering to Kaylin, Not for standard precations, no. The law doesn't expect to hold the guard accountable for someone who's deathly alergic to straw, for instance - which did come up once...... in the Guard's favor.
(3) Kaylin: "I can still perform the stoning, however, can you tell me who will be reviving him?"
whispering to Kaylin, If you could demonstrate that they had been lacing the cell with stuff intended to cause disease, you could make a case.... but not for something that's really just an extension of the Iron.
(3) Kaylin: "He doesn't seem healthy enough to survive most revivings."
(1) GM: Guard: Whoever's handy in five days or whatever it is when he goes to trial.
(1) GM: Guard: You want the contract?
(2) Kibin: ...except that I'm not a wizard, the only reason I know that the antimagic field is there is because I have this form partly because of magic, and the lack of that magic is probably making me sick... quiet now...
(1) GM: Guard: We do prefer people actually live to reach Lawful Judgement.
(3) Kaylin: "I don't feel confident, but I may know someone who could do such a thing safely."
(3) Kaylin: "Certainly. Do you, dragon, still want to be stoned instead of waiting?"
(2) Kibin: Yes...
** (3) Kaylin grimaces. "Well, then..." **
** (3) Kaylin goes over to Kibin and casts a flesh to stone, perhaps with a bit more flair than strictly required by the spell. **
(2) Kibin: (Hopefully they use break enchantment, which has no save to prevent dying.)

(3) Kaylin: (What, you think I'd risk letting you die unnecessarily?)

(1) GM: The guards pick him up, take him back inside, and put him in a closet.

(1) GM: On passing the threshold, you feel the magic drain out of the area. Seems the entire jail is under the influence of an AMF.

(12) Kibin: (Everyone got disconnected, last thing I saw from you is putting me in a closet.)
(10) Kaylin: "Yes, I can see that this jail would be harmful to him..."
(1) GM: Well, your character was stoned for the rest, so it doesn't matter too much.
(12) Kibin: ("Whoa, pretty colors man...")
(11) Katsuro: (Back.)
(1) GM: Anyway, the guards take Kaylin on a tour. Show her the Dimensional Shackles used to transport prisoners to and from trial, the oversized shelves where they keep stoned prisoners called "escape risks", and the clean cells with fresh straw where the prisoners are kept. Where you spot Katsuro.
** (11) Katsuro is rather cuious, but remains silent...For now. **
(12) Kibin: (I'm in a closet, while the actual 'escape risks' are on shelves? :P)
(1) GM: Guard: And this one was arrested along with the silver dragon. Charges levied will be accessory to inciting a public panic, good for a year of hard labor or a suitable dangerous Geas if convicted. It's a pity we couldn't catch the one that did the actual scaring. That Darven wizard would get two years.

(1) GM: He does, however, seem a bit fuzzy on the details of the exact crimes commited....
(1) GM: After the tour, the guard escorts kaylin back to the gate.
** (13) Kibin sits expressionless in the closet. **

(1) GM: Guard: Well, and now you no. Pretty hard to escape, isn't it? If you find anyone who did something we haven't tracked down yet, please, report them. You'll feel safe knowing they won't be getting out on our watch.
(10) Kaylin: "Oh, I was wondering about that scaring... I overheard someone talking about it nearby, what actually happened? Might go into a little investigating myself, if that's legal..."
(1) GM: Guard: Long as you don't break any laws in the investigation. You don't have the right to demand answers of unwilling citizens. Here, I'll look it up for you....
(1) GM: The guard takes you to a desk, and pulls out a file.
(1) GM: Guard: Here we are.... four of the guard as witnesses to the event itself ... no traces of mind-influencing magic on them... ah, and Elf woman, not a dwarven wizard..... Ah, an indecent exposure charge if we catch her. Those are always funny. Plenty of civilians... an open and shut case, really.
(1) GM: Guard: Those two resting in jail are there as accomplices - they admitted to being her firends, and were actively trying to stop the guard from doing their job of eliminating a clear and present threat to the peace of the town.
(10) Kaylin: "I'm surprised I didn't hear more. I'll keep my eyes out, it's always sad when a dignified creature falls. Thank you for your time."
(1) GM: Guard: Take care. Try to stay on the right side of the law, eh?
(1) GM: Guard: Oh, and if you're serious about helping....
(10) Kaylin: "Always. Take care, too."
(1) GM: the guard pulls out a quill, and some parchment.
** (10) Kaylin walks out, trying to avoid goosebumps. **
(1) GM: He then lais the parchment over the report and drops the quill on it.
(1) GM: The quill gets up on it's own, and after a while, finishes making a copy of the report. Not that anyone notices, what with Kaylin having already left.
(1) GM: The guard shrugs, and files both copies.
** (10) Kaylin goes to see if she can find Elorin or Jason **
(1) GM: Elorin and Jason are easily found. Neither of them broke Invisibility..... and Elorin, as a Chaotic, didn't feel particularly inclined to hang around to be arrested.
(10) Kaylin: "So... I just turned Kibin to stone, and Katsuro is still sitting in jail, and neither seem interested in escaping."
(1) GM: Jason: So, do you want to see about busting them out, or just waiting for the trial?
(10) Kaylin: "I doubt their consciences will let them get out of this without being lawfully punished, too."
(10) Kaylin: "Well, we could try getting them out, but if Katsuro is still sitting there I doubt he's even thinking about trying to get out. You remember how he dealt with the antimagic stones in the castle..."
(1) GM: Jason: Ah, it was just the one door.....
(1) GM: Jason: But he isn't really the type to just walk out on a charge, is he?
(10) Kaylin: "That's precisely the problem."
(13) Kibin: (So wait till the trial, maybe we can get out of the charges?)
(10) Kaylin: "Oh, and Elorin, they'll be looking for someone to cast Break Enchantment in about a week for the trial. Need to make sure that Kibin survives being de-stoned."
(1) GM: Elorin: Yeah, I can cover that, I think. Did you remember to pull the punch? I'd rather not have to do two or three castings.
(10) Kaylin: "I think I forgot to..."

(10) Kaylin: "We could consult law books. There's bound to be some kind of loophole... if nothing else, we may be able to claim they were under the influence of mind-affecting magic."
(10) Kaylin: "I think the guard meant the other guards, but if the 'elf wizard' was sufficiently skilled we may be able to make a case for it being too subtle to detect using standard means."
(1) GM: Jason: I've been watching them. Everyone gets a detect Magic before going into prison. They're watching for traces of enchantment. And tell me, do you really want to have to make a case in front of the very guards who saw you? I mean, the rest of them are one thing.....
(10) Kaylin: "That's true... I really don't want to have to be around them more than necessary. The jail tour felt risky enough as it was."
(1) GM: Jason: Don't get me wrong - they didn't get a very long look, but you did atttract quite a few male eyes before going invisible.....
(10) Kaylin: "I would guess so.."

(10) Kaylin: "I think that would have a definite negative impact on the trial."

whispering to Kaylin, Usually judge and jury; the defendant can speak for himself, or request trial by single combat, again either personally or through a champion... although most don't request trial by combat, as it raises the stakes to "death and binding" regardless of the crime, and the King has been known to volunteer as the champion of Law, rather than appointing someone to act in his stead as would most rulers.
(13) Kibin: (For someone chaotic, you know a lot about law.)
(10) Kaylin: (Hey, gotta know about law if you want to avoid having 50 guards shooting at you...)
(1) GM: It was only four..... that time.

(1) GM: Bluff applies to snap decisions; Diplomacy just makes people friendly; results will depend on the Judge's alignment.
(10) Kaylin: "Elorin, do you think you'd be able to make a case that they were trying to prevent needless injuries by the guards shooting at a target they might miss, and hurt bystanders?"
(10) Kaylin: "Since they knew the wizard was not hostile and was also too distraught to think about consequences..."
(13) Kibin: (I'll probably end up doing so anyway... though the nauseated bit will hurt. Aaand... I could just decide to break out at any time, there are other opportunities to break out. Especially if the hard labor is in a frozen barren wasteland. :)
(1) GM: Bluff might let you keep some evidence out of court (inadmissable) but judges practice on liars all day.....

Kibin, Due to the dragon-kingdom accords, I can't give you the standard punishment of two years hard time. I'm afraid you'll have to face the laws we have in the draconic sections of our books, if you'll hold a minute while I look them up......
(1) GM: Anyone present care to make a Knoweledge(Arcana) check to have a better grasp of them than the Judge?

(1) GM: The judge, after listening to Kibin for a time and double checking a couple of things, agrees, and sentences Kibin to Exile. Violation of exile is, of course, punishable with summary execution.
(1) GM: Judge: Baliff? Where can we use a strong back?
(1) GM: Balif: We are actually ahead on the mines; won't have any free picks worth the salt for a while. Ditto for the farms; it's been a good year for the police force. We could get creative, if you're willing to commute the sentence.
(1) GM: Judge: Hmm.... what do you have in mind?
(1) GM: Baliff: Well, the quest file is still open; we've got some missing crown jewels, the King's Grandfather's sword still hasn't been located, and there's that suit of armor rumored to be buried in the abyss the King's been wanting.
(1) GM: Judge: I'm in a good mood; Katsuro, which would you prefer?
(1) GM: Baliff: Wait... why does it say "back" after the suit of armor? Ah, he lost it on vacation.
(1) GM: The Baliff sits there blinking at the parchment for a while.
(1) GM: The Baliff looks at the Judge.

whispering to Katsuro, Has a listing of the history of the jewels, where they were first discovered, what happened to the mines after (seems they broke into the underdark around the same time those particular jewels were found). No mention of who cut them. No listed magical properties. Mostly it consists of the names of the various kings who had them before the current king's grandfather looted them off the corpse of the previous ruler of this area.
whispering to Katsuro, It also describes them in detail, with pictures. Seems there's a peculiar flaw in the exact center of each.....
(10) Kaylin: (test)
whispering to Katsuro, The jewels are quite sizeable, the smallest about the size of a man's open palm.
(1) GM: Baliff: Oh, and drink this, would you?
(1) GM: The Baliff hands Katsuro a small vial.
** (15) Katsuro drinks this. **
(1) GM: Baliff: Okay. And one for Kibin...
(1) GM: The Baliff hand's Kibin a differently colored vial.
** (13) Kibin "drinks this" too. Hmmmm, fruity. **
(1) GM: The baliff then proceeds to remove the restraints on both Kibin and Katsuro.
(1) GM: Baliff: Okay. Kibin, you've got a week before you're required to be at least a hundred miles form the castle. If you're still in range after that, or if you come back into range after leaving, you'll be caught in violation of exile rather immediately.
(13) Kibin: Fine with me...
(1) GM: Baliff: Katsuro: Welcome to your quest. You'll find you'll be unable to rest unless you've made a serious attempt at progress on your quest from here on out. The results aren't pretty on the second or third week.
** (15) Katsuro shrugs **
(1) GM: Baliff: And for both of you: Those potions don't mix well with anything we hand out in punishment. If you've ever been subject to one, the second is always fatal. They also act as beacons to the court magician, if someone later decides you're a problem.
(1) GM: Baliff: Well, you're free to go. Good day.
** (15) Katsuro bows curtly and leaves **
(1) GM: The Baliff bows, and heads back to his station. Other guards retrieve the restraints and escort you safely out.
** (13) Kibin does likewise, as much as a dragon can bow, and leaves as well, letting the guards escort him out. **
(1) GM: The judge calls the next case; seems a sticky bit of "he says he had permission, she says he didn't"
(1) GM: But in any event, you're out of the building before more than the initial charges can be read.
(15) Katsuro: (BRB)
(13) Kibin: Well then... that was fun...
(1) GM: So, who does what from the Courthouse?
** (13) Kibin goes find the rest of the party that didn't get arrested. **
(1) GM: So once everyone's back together.....
(10) Kaylin: "I'm so sorry, you two... I completely panicked and you tried to help, but you got in trouble with the weird laws around here..."
(10) Kaylin: "oh, and Kibin, sorry for turning you to stone... you can probably put the fee to better use."
** (10) Kaylin tosses Kibin the sack of 660 gp **
(13) Kibin: Eh, it's over now. Speaking of which, if I'm within a hundred miles of the castle in a week, I get executed. And... uh, thanks.
(1) GM: Elorin also hands over his 660 gp fee for turning Kibin back. "Meh, not my color anyway."
(10) Kaylin: "One week? Lots of time."
(10) Kaylin: "So what did they end up doing to you?"

(13) Kibin: And I can't ever come back within a hundred miles... though I don't ever want to come back here again.
(15) Katsuro: "I, apparently, have a new quest. To find some missing crown jewels."
(13) Kibin: Plus it's probably not a good idea for me to stay inside an antimagic field for an extended period of time, as you found out...
(15) Katsuro: (Do we have to go till eight or ten tonight? My brain gets seriously fried by then...)
(13) Kibin: (10:30 EST, usually, that's 7:30 PST...)
(15) Katsuro: (Most of the time, it's 8:30 PST...)

(1) GM: Well, let's see... we've had a run in with the local underworld, killed a PC, goofed a Wish, had a run in with the local law, and gotten a quest, as well as a few Gp as hired spellcasters. Been a full day.
(15) Katsuro: (Yes. I've made a note of the time. 11:30 EST)
(10) Kaylin: "I see..."
(13) Kibin: (Did Kaylin get the items back?)
(15) Katsuro: (Yeah, I'd rather quit at, well, riight now or six. When I still have brain cells left...)
(1) GM: Yes, offscreen, after the commontion had died down and she had time to take 20 on her search.
(13) Kibin: I see you have your items back...
(10) Kaylin: Yes, managed to find them after the guards left.
(1) GM: Jason: So, call it a day and pick up Katsuro's quest tomorrow?
(13) Kibin: Yeah, still not feeling all that good...
(10) Kaylin: "That's understandable, after being in an antimagic field for so long..."
(1) GM: And out of character, call it a day and pick up Katsuro's quest in two weeks?
(10) Kaylin: All right by me.
