Into the DMZ*
*
Date: June 5, 2009*
*
Battle Location: Demilitarised Zone, western sector, Korea*
*
Battle Type: South Korea assault vs North Korea defend.*
*
Description: Led by the United States an international coalition with is formed to put pressure on the ever defiant North Korea. The goal is to force Pyongyang to adhere to the demand of the international community, especially regarding the suspected Nuclear Weapons program.*
*
Despite a build-up of various forces in South Korea the North Korean leadership does not find the coalition to be a credible threat, as there is some disagreement between chiefly the European countries and the United States, on top of which most of the coalition partners are more or less bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan.*
*
A number of ultimatums put forward by the coalition are ignored. Efforts by China to mediate in the crisis fail. North Korea mobilise some of its forces, but preparations are limited as the leadership in Pyongyang remains secure in the belief that the military build-up is a bluff.*
*
On June 5 the military operations against North Korea commences with air and cruise missile strikes on high priority targets. Commando units are also inserted, primarily against identified NBC weapon sites.*
*
Soon after the initial strikes coalition forces begin to cross into the DMZ separating the two Koreas. The main burden of penetrating the heavily dug in KPA forces fall on the infantry divisions of the ROK. Picking their way through the minefields elements of the 27th Division make good headway until they reach a stream in front of a number of small hills where the North Koreans are entrenched. The attack loses momentum, and it is at this time the heavy enemy artillery starts to make its presence felt. ROK armour support is fed into the attack, but no bridging units make it to the battle area forcing the tanks to attempt to cross the stream on their own.*

Notes: If played against the AI the human player should take the South Korean side.*
