Battalion's Recon Platoon*
*
The Battalion's recce platoon is used to gather enemy intel and to wear out enemy units with indirect fires in the battalion's AOR. In defence the recon units are usually sent well in front of the main defences to report enemy movements and to fire indirect fires against high value targets.*
*
During attack the battalion usually sends in the recon elements well in advance to sniff any enemy minefields and ambushes, and to gather intel on enemy defences and troop movements. When the attack itself starts, the recon units move away from the immediate battlefield and start using indirect fires against enemy reserves and support units in the depth of enemy defence.*
*
The recon sections usually work in patrols, with one section held back for reserve. The patrols avoid firefights with the enemy and move with great skill, unnoticed in the deep wooded terrain. The reconnaissance is done either on foot or using skis during wintertime, and the APCs are mainly used to move the sections to the operation area. The weapons are mainly for self defence and ambushing, and consist of rifles and mines, that are quickly deployed to be used in defence of the observation points, or against anyone trying to pursuit the withdrawing patrols.*
*
The units have specialized radio equipment to report enemy contacts and to call in fires. The sections work behind enemy lines only for few days before they need to return to the battalion to resupply.*
