Jaeger Company*
*
These companies are found in Jaeger Battalions of Jaeger Brigades (org 91), or in Battalion sized Battlegroups.*
*
These jaegers are a product of the Areal Defence doctrine developed and adopted by the FDF in the 1960's. In the doctrine the enemy attack is weakened by the areal forces and sissi units, and let into the depth of Finnish defence, where it is finally stopped by the heavy defensive units. Prior to the Jaeger Brigades, only the forces of Armoured Brigade(s) had the equipment needed to conduct swift and decisive attack to destroy the worn out enemy units, whose attack was stopped and supply flow bogged down.*
*
The jaegers move into the attack area using the terrain to their advantage, avoiding terrain that the enemy AFVs can use. Once near the enemy, the jaegers move into attack formation using the heavily wooded and tank-unfriendly terrain that is not suited for the attacking mechanized enemy. From there, the attack is launched, supported by heavy indirect fire and other support (engineer etc.). The idea is to get close to the enemy under the fast, but fierce barrage, in order to prevent the enemy from using his heavy artillery effectively. The decisive attack would be fought in close combat, in good infantry terrain, where the short range firepower and large number of short range AT weapons coupled with areal supremecy in numbers would swing the battle in favour of the attacker.*
*
The 3 jaeger platoons have all 3 sections of 7 men, with one section having 3 man APILAS -patrol to hunt down enemy tanks in the platoon's AOR. Otherwise the equipment is good for close range firepower in form of automatic weapons and short range light AT -weapons. Each platoon also has 2 12,7mm AAMGs that are used against low flying choppers and attack planes. To direct the artillery fires, the Jaeger Company has an FO platoon, and the company CO also has an AT-section of 2 APILAS patrols and a 3-man sniper patrol he can use according to his plan. In the new Organization 91 the Jaeger Companies lost the light mortar platoons. To compensate this, the Battalion's Mortar Company has 9 tubes instead of the old 6 in organization 80. Radio equipment is found mostly in the FO platoons to be used to get indirect support, not in the jaeger platoons. In addition to this, the riflemen need all the support from long range AT weapons, engineers, artillery etc. to succesfully defeat the enemy.*
*
The jaegers should avoid fighting in places where its open and/or the firing ranges are long, as the enemy usually has the upper hand with its armoured infantry and tanks.*
*
NOTE:*
This formation is best used for either those units that do not have APCs, or for those that have dismounted and moved their APCs away from harm's way, for example in prepared defence.*
