I'm curious about this DSL hookup...is this just a normal DSL hookup that a user would use to surf the internet from thier home computer or is it a specialized one designed for servers?

If it's the former, I'm suprised it would take so long just to setup an account for that, who'd want to wait over 3 weeks just to get service - yikes. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

You need a static IP in order for a server to work properly. Normal DSL usually makes a forced disconnect at regular intervalls, just to make sure you don't get a static IP, so they can charge ridiculous overprices for static. Few noteworthy exeptions.

Not really. You can use services like www.no-ip.org to keep your server up to date. As long as you have a stable IP (as in, it stays the same for a few days) and can keep on top of changes, the downtimes are minimal. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif This isn't a good idea for huge web sites like www.microsoft.com, but for something with the relatively low traffic of PBW, it is not a big problem. Of course, you could always write a program to detect changes in IP address and send the appropriate commands to get the IP of the domain updated automatically...

"Minimal downtime" is not running a server properly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .
Plus, especially with PBW rather than microsoft.com (who really needs it? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ), where you have to rely on the server, or you will end up with "manual only" constantly. You cannot run automated turns on a server that may be unavailable for the Last half hour before deadline.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I am fully aware that this is doable from a technical aspect. The problem is it violates the user agreement, at least for the few isp's I looked into in my area. Also keep in mind that PBW requires a decent upload speed to be a consistantly functional game server. In fact it's uploading more then it's downloading. Your typical residential dsl, even many cable modems, run in the 128 range on the upload. I was told when I took over the service form Admiral that 128 upload was not enough.
