Both my parents are full-blooded Finns, but they went to New York to study and my dad later started working there. In the meanwhile, both my brother and I were born in NYC, which under American law makes us citizens. We moved back to Finland when I was four or something.

End result: I've got two passports to choose between according to the situation and have two first languages. Not a bad deal, I think. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Yes, not bad at all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Makes me think of the movie "Dave"

"She's American.... She's Polynesian... She's Amnesian."

People with dual citizenship were common in the military. Often military moved around and had their kids overseas. It has its pros and cons (sometimes you could be drafted by two different countries at the same time)

I believe a dual citizenship equals a "You get out of the Army for free" -card in Finland, at least that was the case for my stepsister's Finnish/English son... Lucky 'em.

Tell me more, because AFAIK despite my best hopes it equals no such thing. Believe me, I've looked into the matter.

I can tell you that you will definitely not get a "get out of army free" card in Israel if you have another citizenship.
Unless your other citizenship is something like "Saudi Arabia", in which case how the hell did you get an Israeli citizenship? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Huh? Okay, maybe it only applies to people with a permanent residence abroad. I'm not too much in the know, I just heard my stepnephew wasn't to go to army despite being half Finn. Or then I've misunderstood.

...anyway, you know, contrary what you're told in the conscription lecture, civil service is an option. All fun and games before a lifetime stigma. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Been there, done that.

Ah, that'd be it. I live in Finland so I can't escape my "civic duty". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

An option, sure, but not a particularly appealing one. Takes longer and, as far as I've heard (Dunno about the conscription lecture, never bothered to read the brochure they sent me), isn't really that much more enjoyable than the military anyway.

Fake depression. It'll get you out.

Alternatively, shoot someone. I bet the time you spend in jail will be less than for draft dodging. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Or then escape with me to Malaysia. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/stupid.gif
