other people have said that you only need a text editer to edit html. i havn't made a website, though.
should this post go in the useless information thread?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The minimum is a text editor to make the web page (any text editor will do) and a web browser to view it (again, any old browser will work). However, if you want to build a complex website, you may want to hunt up a utility somewhere. Oddly, Microsoft Word has an option to make a web page out of a document (File-Save as-Select HTML from the drop-down box) if you just want to post a few pictures, some text, and a few links.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You could do what David E. Gervais appears to do - upload the HTML to the forums and link to them in your signiture. The Advantages: Size limit is per file only, ~ 30 MB; No advertising by the host; No host fees. Disadavantages: cannot edit a file once it is posted, can only upload a new one; the filenames are controlled by the Bulitin board, and are set to arbitrary numbers (so you must upload all of your pictures and other files to the forums before you write the web page, which also means you will need to use a text editor and make the HTML by hand); must have the extesion be .htm (as opposed to .html - not a big liability at all).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I like the name Machina. It makes me think of FFX. That is what they called Machines in that game. (Great game BTW http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) It is indeed pronounced as you said just without so much emphasis on the "kee" part of it. It's more like Maw-ka-na.

As far as your HTML help. It has already been said but you can use just a normal text editor to make the site. I use Macromedia Dreamweaver for my websites, but I doubt you want to spend over $250 for a simple page. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I learned the basics of HTML, links, images, backgrounds, in roughly 5 hours. But I was a slow learner then. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif HTML is really easy to learn, and I'm sure you'll have no problem picking it up.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Gah! No! Word produces horrible html!

The best way to learn html (the way I learned) is to find a few nice simple websites (my site is really basic - no complicated source code there- click the banner in my sig), right click on it and go to "view source". Compare the source to the site and you'll soon figure out how most of the simpler html tags work. Then you can start making your own simple html files in notebook and you're away.

Once you've got the hang of those, use google to find html tutorials for specific tags and ways of doing things. The web has about a zillion good, free html tutorials on it...

(BTW everyone, I could do more complex html on my site if I wanted to, I just choose not to for ease of maintenence http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )

I did a lot of reading Last night about the actuall HTML tags and editing stuff, I can do this, now I just need to decide on a host. I'm leaning towards Angelfire, a lot of the SE4 fan sites seem to use that one, unless you got a better idea on which free one to use.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, yeah - it takes up far more space than it should, it tells anyone who looks at the source that Word was used, it does funny things that it doesn't tell you about, and it uses bad programming practices. I did call it "curious", didn't I? It is ok for someone who just wants to post a few pictures or link to a few files; perhaps with some text for those who don't want to put in the effort to learn HTML. It is definitely not for those who want to produce a quality web page.

Word is the devil. Stay away from it for HTML purposes. Wordpad is the best way to make HTML. My web site has some relatively complicated stuff, all written in HTML. And, it is written in very good style, so it can be a nice example to learn HTML.
