Re: Online D&D Gaming

I could play this week, but I'd rather wait until next week. Partly because I had to reinstall windows yesterday and haven't gotten around to reinstalling OpenRPG and recreating my character sheet yet, but also because I have a fair number of other things I need to do, so my free time is somewhat limited atm.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Heh. I installed XP without formatting and from a breif look, everythings still there. So I'm just going to re-install anything that doesn't work.

Randallw January 13th, 2005 05:29 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Ok then Douglas. All things going well we can probably expect to get started next week. Only need to hear from Fyron.

Fyron January 13th, 2005 05:45 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Fyron has had nothing to say.

Fyron January 13th, 2005 10:12 PM

So I am going to assume that there is no gaming tonight...

Randallw January 13th, 2005 11:04 PM

no, I don't think so.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Before we headed onto the Glacier I thought I better tally up the XP.

Draknor: 4230
Sulimo: 10980
Lae'Nial: 7230
Rasorow: 2710
Shaoron: 10980

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Wow, that's quite a jump in XP. Could I please have the 20 extra I need for level 7? So close...

Randallw January 18th, 2005 09:22 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Only 20 pts. I gave it some thought. It would be best to get it done before we start instead of allocating play time to levelling up, but where would I set the line?. Please give me another 200 pts so i can level, or 100 pts. I have decided if not between sessions at least before the start of campaigns I will allow up to a 100 pt bonus to ensure levelling before we start.

douglas January 19th, 2005 05:45 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Just making sure, but that's a "yes", right? The trip to the Glacier certainly seems major enough to merit the bonus to me.

Regardless, I've got a homemade feat I'd like approval for:

Maintain Focus [Psionic]:
Prerequisite Feat: Psionic Meditation
Choose one feat, power, or ability that requires expending your psionic focus to use. You still must be psionically focused to use the feat, power, or ability, but you no longer expend your focus in doing so. This may in some cases allow you to use an additional ability that requires expending psionic focus simultaneously with the chosen ability, or it may just eliminate the need for refocusing afterwards. The affected feat, power, or ability is chosen at the time this feat is taken and never changes. This feat may be taken multiple times but does not stack - each time, a different feat, power, or ability must be chosen.

I would choose Psionic Endowment as the feat to be affected. For information on psionic focus, read the Gain Psionic Focus part of the concentration skill description here. Since I already have Psionic Meditation, which reduces the time to focus to a move action, this feat would allow me to boost my save DCs either without giving up my movement to refocus or while also using a metapsionic feat.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Yes, take the extra points to get the next level. I'll give the new feat some thought.

Fyron January 19th, 2005 06:04 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Umm... you have not even 11000 XP. You need 15000 to get to level 6, and 21000 to get to level 7. There was no leveling up here...

Unless, of course, Randall is trying to say that we just earned 11000 experience for killing a few monsters, which would be insane.

Randallw January 19th, 2005 08:12 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Actually that is exactly what I was saying. I don't mind the criticism, it's exactly what I was expecting. I couldn't believe the figure myself, but I have checked it twice and if it's wrong I am missing something big. But I don't know what it is.

heres an example.

you fought 8 wolves with CR 1 each.
thats 300 xp each x 8 = 2400xp
divide the 2400 xp by the 5 party members at that time gives 480.
There was also 5 Ogre Skeletons (CR6). 6 Ogre Skeletons. 2 Assasins (CR6), and the Dark CLeric.

I thought I must have been wrong and it's CR for the whole encounter, but it insists I determine xp for each creature. Since my doubts seemed to be wrong (though I couldn't forget them) I thought I had forgotten how quickly levels can rise. I must admit though that I may have failed to represent the creatures encountered at their full strngth.

Fyron January 19th, 2005 04:24 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Those CRs you have are way too high. I think an Ogre is a large creature, which gives an ogre skeleton a CR of 1. Even if it is huge, it would have a CR of 2. So that is 11 of them at CR 1. Even an ogre itself only has a CR of 2...

11 ogre skeletons + 8 wolves = 19 x 300 / 5 = 1140 exp

What level were the assassins and the cleric?

Quote:

I must admit though that I may have failed to represent the creatures encountered at their full strngth.

You are the DM. You can adjust XP awards ad hoc. Too easy? Give less XP. Too hard? Give more. Use your judgement.

douglas January 19th, 2005 04:54 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

CR of skeletons is determined by hit dice, not size. Ogres have 4, so they would be CR 2.

Fyron January 19th, 2005 04:59 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

CR is determined by size. I am looking at the Monster Manual right now.

douglas January 19th, 2005 05:04 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

So am I. Besides that, here's what the SRD has to say about it here:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>Challenge Rating: Depends on Hit Dice, as follows:
Hit Dice Challenge Rating
1/2 1/6
1 1/3
2–3 1
4–5 2
6–7 3
8–9 4
10–11 5
12–14 6
15–17 7
18–20 8</pre><hr />

Is your MM the 3.0 edition perhaps?

Fyron January 19th, 2005 05:23 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

blech. They really screwed everything up with that stupid 3.5 edition. Oh well. The ogre skeletons were CR 2 then, still not 6.

Randallw January 19th, 2005 08:38 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Aha, so that's what went wrong. It was a CR 6 encounter but that doesn't mean they were CR6 Monsters. I'll recalculate the xp. I got it right with the Wolves though.

New calculation

Sulimo 4555
Lae'nial 2105
Shaorin 4555
Draknor 3230
Rasorow 2105

Well, there goes my level-up. I don't even get to level 6 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif . Oh well, at least it gives you plenty of time to consider my new feat.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Since our Last session I get the impression there has been a time change (daylight savings somewhere). What is the current GMT time?, so I can make sure we all schedule the same.

Edit: meanwhile, I messed up again. I didn't consider the npc's contribution to things. I am very tired now, so I am leaving till tomorrow to work out the xp (again http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif)

douglas January 20th, 2005 03:10 PM

I think the session is scheduled for 8 hours from now.

I might be a little late tonight... the server is up and running, so feel free to start without me if I am not there on time.

A bit under 3 hours til the session is scheduled to start as of this post.

Here is hopefully the last calculation for xp so far. It now includes Homus effort, and also the last encounter with the snow goblins. I haven't figured in the red shirts...oops, I mean Guards, because they didn't really have much effect.

Sulimo: 4033
Lae'Nial 3096
Shaorin 4033
Rasorow 1521

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Unless I'm mistaken, our schedule indicates we're having another session in a bit under 3 hours. So, just posting here to make sure, and to remind everyone.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

That's the plan, however before I forget I must say that I will be unable to run a session next week as I have been told to attend an interview.

Hey guys. I'm new to the boards but saw this here D&amp;D thread, and was curious if there was space for one more to hop on board? I've not really read far back on the thread... there ARE 36 pages worth of posts at this point, so I'm sure you'll forgive.

If there's space I'd love to play. I haven't rolled a die in about 10 years, and they are still sitting on my shelf calling my name.

Well we use OpenRPG to play

http://www.openrpg.com/

There is no session planned this week as I am busy. We use 3.0/3.5 rules.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

I'd be glad to download the necessary software. I'm fine with starting next week if that's when the next scheduled time is. Shall we chat (by email or PM) ahead of time and work out character/rules details?

Re: Online D&D Gaming

The party composition page is very out of date. The party currently has a rogue, ranger/cleric, wizard, and psion. There's also a fighter that isn't playing any more, but we're keeping his character around because we're short on fighter types.

The main piece of info you need for character creation is that we're doing standard point buy with 40 points. Oh wait, you say you haven't played in 10 years. In that case, you'll need to do a lot of reading up on 3.5 edition rules.

Edit: Oh yeah, you also need to know that we're all 5th level, so that's what you'll be starting at.

Fyron February 1st, 2005 04:57 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Nobody bothered to send me updated information the last several times I asked for it...

RudyHuxtable, if you want to play as a rogue (aka thief), you can have mine... Otherwise I will just stick with it.

Welcome to the group... we have been looking for someone to join for awhile and think you will have alot of fun.

I know what you mean.... I almost always play some kinda of Cleric normally Ranger/Cleric and have been missing it for while. There is no CRPG that has the fun and breath of flexibility that a good pen and paper game of D&amp;D has. I have been playing D&amp;D since the Expert rules came out.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

I've got a few ideas for characters I've been tossing around for quite a while. I've had a jones to play a female rogue (yes, I'm a guy) but I'm glad to fill in spots where needed. If a fighter type is called for, I'd be okay with playing a cleric? Oh are we in the Forgotten Realms? I've got access to some 3rd Edition books but never had a call to read them. I play Star Wars in RL so I've got a grasp on the changes.

Let me do my research through the day today and do some stat rolling. I'll put a character frame around the results.

The world is Homebrew. The party comes from Oerth but, due to a magical accident, they appeared on my world (Except for Douglas who is from another country). I haven't got a huge tome, but instead develop it as we go. The party just arrived at a castle set on a glacier, so I would assume your character would be at the monastery for some reason.

Just to be absolutely clear, we are using a method of character generation that does not involve stat rolling. The only dice you roll during character creation will be for hit points. For ability scores, you have 40 points to spend among the six scores at the following costs (before racial modifiers):

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>Ability Score Cost
8 0
9 1
10 2
11 3
12 4
13 5
14 6
15 8
16 10
17 13
18 16</pre><hr />

No, I just don't really enjoy playing rogues... Our initial party was quite lacking in thieving talents though.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Apart from the fact, Fyron, that we are pretty top heavy in the old magic department, it doesn't look too fortuitous for you to be a mage.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Well, I gladly offer my services as a rogue, then. I'd like to do something original as opposed to taking over a character if that's okay.

I know you aren't playing this week, so I've got time to finalize some ideas. I can either be a warp in from another world or someone native.

Randall, would you like to discuss my entry into the world? I'll be able to work backstory through that.

I'm looking forward to getting under way.

Randallw February 2nd, 2005 06:31 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

When and where would you be prepared to discuss it. Here or by chat?. Keep in mind I am Australian (although everyone else is American) so there is a time difference.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Okay Randall,

I've sent you a private message about character creation. I'd like to know more about your world and I've given you some contact options. Once we talk I can have her done by Friday and be ready to play next week.

I'm doing work for the BBC next week and the schedule hasn't been set, but I will have three days free so as soon as I get that info I'll pass it along.
