Not an urban legend. In fact, there is a law in the Chesapeake Bay region about not cutting up starfish because people would cut a starfish into four to five pieces to kill it (starfish are a natural enemy of oysters, an endangered species here). What would happen was that instead of killing one starfish, five new ones would grow from the body pieces.
This sounds like a great idea for a SciFi story. Hmmm........ |
