Hey, David.
I just glanced through the images in that link. Very nice. On a few of the minis, though, the lighting is off-center. Se4 dosen't rotate those images, so there's a good chance the "dark side" of the planet could end up actually facing the sun(s)! For protraits, you have a lot more flexibility, of course. SJ, those planets were done by me quite a ways back, I was working on a game called "The Eden Nebula" (of my own design) It was going to be a space exploration, Colonization, Trading game. But alas In those days I was suffering from delusions of grandure. 'Eden' and many other 'game' plans have long since been shelved. To make a long story short,.. before I attempt to start-up my delusions of having my own game development company again, I'll have to get a degree in Accounting, Business Management, Programming and Art. (these were suggested to me by several different venture capital investors.) My business plan took into account hiring people which already had these degrees, but that was not good enough for them! I'll not make that mistake again! It's the worlds loss, not mine, but I digress, sorry.

Attention all hosts of Image Mod mirrors:
The readmes of the Combat and Components packs have lines like this in them: To install this imagemod, copy all the contained files into your ".../SE4/Pictures/components" directory. Replace "components.bmp" with "Newcomponents.bmp". All of the original SE4 images are contained in the new BMP, so all other mods and saved games will not be affected. The facilities and planets packs do not have these lines in them. You need to add a line like this to the html page on your mirrors: To install this imagemod, copy all the contained files into your ".../SE4/Pictures/xxxx" directory, where "xxxx" stands for the name of that part of the image mod (combat, components, facilities, or planets). Replace "xxxx.bmp" with "Newxxxx.bmp". All of the original SE4 images are contained in the new BMP, so all other mods and saved games will not be affected. See my mirror for an example. Doing this will help to alleviate a lot of confusion over how to install the Image Mod properly. SJ: Future Versions of the Planet and Facility packs need to have this info in their readmes. I think it would be best for the ImageMod to just overwrite the existing files. Perhaps the readme file could contain a message to backup the original files if the user doesn't want to get rid of them.

That would probably be better, but this solution works now. Overwriting requires a new release of the image mod files.

I'll bet there aren't system images because they're too big.
My Hypermaze mod adds only five new system .bmps, yet the .zip file is nearly 8M. |

Aside from the size, there is no need to worry about conflicts with system images, since they have arbitrary filenames.
If it became a problem, we could just have modders put their own name or their mod's name in front of the regular filename. EG: Proportions_starmap.bmp, TNGmod_starmap.bmp, etc. For the imagemod images, they all need to be given their number and there is a components.bmp (and facilities.bmp, and etc) which must contain all the images you want to use... Having a single file makes things difficult for compatibility, and you end up having similar almost-copies of the same file in each mod folder. Thus the reason for the imagemod. Make a standard all-inclusive image file, that all mods can use, cutting down on the download time for individual mods, and reducing harddrive space usage. |
