Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

G'evening everyone, I've had my copy of dom3 for few weeks now and got myself around to register to forums just moments ago. I'm a Finnish university student with too much free time (never seem to have time to do anything important though...) who likes computers and good scifi books. Looking forward to playing with/against at least some of you :)

Had Dom 3 for some months, I think I'm an awful player :o, but I really like the game; now I want to try some MP.

I am veteran (geez, can a 30-year old say that?) single player strategy gamer from Finland since the times of original Empire, and now I'm enthusiastic to get a feel on multiplayer strategy gaming. And what would be a better game for that than Dominions 3 :)

As a general fantasy & strategy game fan I've had my eyes on Dominions for a long while, but purchased Dominions 3 only a month ago. A slow paced PBEM suits me pretty nice since I have a wife and 2 kids to spend time with.

Welcome! We can use another Finn to swell the ranks of the horde. :)
All told, there are or have been quite a few Finns here. Me, Endoperez and at least three or four others.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Finns are trustworthy people. Better than swedes in fact :)

Not that swedes are bad. They are just less frequent dominions players than expected :)

I'm actually surprised that there ain't more Finns here!

Maybe the reason is that there doesn't seem to be any kind of article about Dominions 3 in the most influental Finnish gaming magazine (Pelit)... any idea why is it so, Edi? I didn't see a review on their web pages at least.

You're not the only one wondering :)

It's my old student number, and I use it as a login almost everywhere, so I don't need to keep track of different logins on different sites. Lazy me.

PS. Actually I'm just a random generated bot.

Pelit did a number on both Dominions PPP and Dominions 2, but not on Dominions 3. We do have one Finnish review linked from the post-release press sticky thread and I translated the thing to English in the same thread. Haven't seen others.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

I wonder, when Endoperez is done with his Kalevala mod, if Pelit might then be interested in doing an article on both Dom3 and the mod? It seems like it would be a good idea for one-connecting Finnish historical/national elements to modern computer gaming. I suppose it might be a little controversial, but that's all to the better where sales are concerned.

As I said, Pelit magazine is very influential on gaming in Finland, and a review in it would very likely affect Dom3 popularity in Finland. Dom-PPP and Dom2 received really good grades (87/100 and 90/100) earlier, and I'm sure Dom3 would do that too. I was really really surprised to see it had not been reviewed yet.

I'd encourage any Illwinter guys or gals reading this to send a copy over to Pelit magazine :)

Linking the Kalevala mod with the review might be a nice touch too!

PS. I'm not in any way affiliated to the Pelit magazine. Being a subscriber doesn't count, does it? :)

I'd have to finish it first! :D There are many things in the way, including the ideas I've had about Early and Late era versions, but I can release the current version as soon as I come up with a good name, and a good title. The thread is in the modding subforum if you think you have an idea.

Another newbie here...

21 year old Russian (Moscow Region), been playing computer games for 13 years, RPGs for 7 years (starting with Aquarius Era, a GURPS-like Russian RPG system, through several other systems, now primarily D&D), found Dom2 a couple years ago, played from time to time, been playing Dom3 SP for a month now, still a complete newb, at your service. =)

Guess I'll primarily lurk this forum for the tons of useful advice you guys provide - a huge thank-you to everyone for that. =)

Hi, I'm new here. I'm a long time gamer and tend to prefer complicated (deep) games, but I have to say Dom3 seems way more complicated than I'm used to (a good thing). I spent most of last night with the demo and am now eagerly awaiting delivary of the full version. Expect loads of obscure newbie questions in the near future, but I'll try and find the answers before I post. :re:

Hi, my name is P**** and I´m addicted to diet cola and dominions 3.

Oh, and I like scourging provinces to the last man (or whatever they are supposed to be populated by. I make an IC assumption of the population being either mixed, or changing to the invader´s by virtue of immigration and ethnic cleansing, whichever applies better :p) and seeing the AI´s armies starve

Hah!

That means you are OLD!

I remember the older guys who played when I was young. They were definitely OLD! And played strange games in foreign languages, like english. A year later I became old and played strange games in foreign languages (D&D) :)

HoneyBadger September 6th, 2008 03:32 AM

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

I'm old, but I have all my hair-thin though it may be in places, and none of it is grey. So I am thankful.

I've always been too fat, I've always had joint pain, I've never had enough energy, so these are nothing new to me-and I've learned better ways of coping with them, over those years.

I wear my glasses all the time, and shoes more often, and I'm cold more often. I have to exercise more, for less benefit. Those things might have bothered me, but they don't.

The hair growing from my ears like a malevolent Pangaea Dominion is new, and does bother me a little, because my ears aren't cold, so what is the point?

I seem to lose more than I used to, to fail more, at things I really want to succeed at, than I used to. That's the worst thing.

I might have taken over the world when I was young, but now all I want is to live well, within it. And I find that I can be contented, where before I could not. I can enjoy moments for themselves, rather than always looking to the next three things. It's still rare, but it happens. That's pretty fine.

HB, as for old, well, geezer-hood is upon me.. sigh.. I started playing board games way back when, lst game was gettysburg by AH, large pieces... hair is greying, whats left of it :( more around sides and back then on top :re: took over more more worlds and battlefields then I can remember (of course senility makes me not remember all those I lost  of which there were also more then i can count , However, I always remember what my dear old grandfather once told me... "Your only as old as your little finger" :D Besides gaming makes everyone young so age is timeless when your engrossed in fighting off the hordes trying to beat you into the next dimension...

I miss Avalon Hill. </3

I also miss when the 3M Bookshelf games were so popular (for good reason!), I still play Acquire sometimes with my folks, on the holidays.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

I never did that much board-wargaming. Stratego and miniature painting was about the closest I got.

I miss things like .25c Arcade games, and paperback books costing under 4 bucks, and Saturday morning cartoons.

And breakdance-fighting. I remember when that actually was like a valid means of conflict resolution.

I remember 19c gal for gas, cigs for 20c a pack and M C burgers for 7c , 35c for a show, 75c - 1.25 per hr for work. UGH.......
I rember playing pong on my tv, then my coleco and atari 2600, ah some of those old games were good, river raid, tank vs tank...and of course my subscription to SPI which made my favorite board game of course T.S.S. (Terrible Swift Sword) anad I Still have all those old SPI, AH, board and computer games plus the SPI mags and the games. Time to start selling them, no more room left to store them all and its just to hard to find players to sit down and play those long board games anymore.. everyone is into computers.. Sigh....

JimMorrison September 26th, 2008 03:25 AM

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

-- "Gameplay takes place over a large series of turns, where each daylight game turn represents 20 minutes of simulated battle action; each night turn simulates 1 hour. Game scenarios include The First Day (29 game turns), The Second Day (40 turns), Little Round Top (6 turns), The Third Day (Pickett's Charge) (21 turns), and the Grand Battle Game: The Three Days of Gettysburg (149 turns, approximated at 50 hours of playing time). The game inventory includes over 2,000 counters,[1] one 32-page rules booklet, one historical situation briefing booklet, three unmounted 22" x 32" paper game maps depicting the battlefield at 120 yards per hex, and one six-sided die. Players alternate taking turns, depending upon the scenario. The time required to play is one of the longest of all SPI games, often taking longer than it took to fight the battle in real life, and the game is sometimes jocularly referred to as "Terrible Slow Sword" in consequence."

Your on HB, would be nice to play a board game again... true TSS is a long game, but there are longer ones, War in West, War in the East and the grand game, plus war in the pacific to name just a few of the old board games. sigh.. those were the days, I used to play with 6 of my friends, but 2 moved out of state, 1 moved another county over and the other 3 are into computers and just don't have the time anymore. .... we used to play on Sunday nites. man were those games long, 1 took over 1 yr to finish, (playing only on Sunday nites... we'd get some beer, pizza etc and had a good old time, those were real fun times back then...

Hi!

I learned about Dominions 3 while lurking on another forum and reading threads talking about the game and got interested.

I'm 24 years old and live in Germany. Haven't been too much of a strategy gamer before (except for so many hours wasted playing Master of Orion 2 ;) )

It's going a bit slow getting into the game and thinking up a magic research strategy beforehand and things like that, or deciding on nations to learn the ins and outs of, but I'm keeping at it.

Hey All.

I'm not really new, used to play a fair amount of Dom2, returning after a long hiatus.

Have a 4 month old, so what could I need more than a timesink like Dom3? ;-) Demo looks good, though it seems like there aren't many national heroes available.... is that just a demo feature?

Anyone have any especially juicy discount code for dom3, or is SAVE12P the way to go?

Does one go on IRC to arrange MP, or is some successor to Mosehansen still running?

What are the "standard" mods these days if you'll excuse the oxyidiom?

Rabe

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

It seems the forum ate my previous post...

Welcome back,

all nations (EA Agartha) don't have heroes. There are mods that improve this.

Conceptual Balance is around. There are mods that remove chaff units from SP -> AI hordes aren't as bad as they used to be. Sound Mod makes elephant hordes lots less annoying.

Blitzes are on IRC, Llamabeast has created a llamaserver.
