Welcome to the forum! :D

One tip you might find useful is not picking Vanheim, Helheim or Tir na n'Og as computer opponents when you start learning Dominions. They have a nasty habit of being able to mass absolutely humongous armies and they have some seriously good units, especially the heims. They don't lose too many of them in most battles, which means their units rack up experience, making them even tougher. Choose somewhat easier enemies to go up against at first, such as Arco, that will allow you a shot at winning.

The heims are by no means invulnerable or anything, but you need to know what to do to counter them.

Take a look at the various guides on the forum, especially Baalz's stuff is eye-opening, bu maybe a tad advanced for a beginner.

Starting my third game now, maybe working a little harder on research. Glad to be here.

Welcome aboard.

The way to defeat someone who is out-producing you is to out-research them. Just look out Blade Wind (Evo/Earth), Soul Slay (Thaum/Astral) and Golems (Constr/Earth and Astral) for some ways to handle all kinds of problems.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Welcome Akela

If I can give you a suggestion, you could use 2 nations at once for a game. So if you are ganged up by the AIs you can "help yourself with the other hand", and it will become less frustrating to be attacked ;) It also removes the problem of inadvertently clicking the "End turn" button :D

Marverni is a bit difficult to play for beginners, imho, as Astral magic, and expecially the communions part, is hard even just to learn and a lot more to master. You could consider starting with something a bit more straightforward - Abysia is great for that, but you could have fun with Agartha, Ulm, Yomi... Those aren't definitively powerhouses, but are simpler to play and you will start to have the impression that everything you research really improves your army :)

Hope to see you on the board often!

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm going to take advantage of most of them. For one thing, I'm going to ditch the Marveni for now. For my third game I'm going to try either Marchaka or Ulm. The Norse tribes seem really good too, but they've made me so mad I refuse to play them until I've whooped them a few times.

I'll look around for the strategy guides and I'll also find the right forum for having this kind of thread.

Thanks for the help!

Hi everybody.

I am new on the forum. First sorry for all the mistakes I am going to do, my english is not excellent.

So I'm a 19 year old french man, and I have been playing dominion for about three years. I started with dominion 2 that I used to play in SP, then played dominion 3 SP too. This year, I have more time to play so I have started my first MP game. Thus, I have decided to join this forum that I've been reading a lot.

That's all!

One of the stickied topics is a list of strategy guides.
Everything that isn't a mod or a multiplayer usually goes to this general forum.

If you don't mind, we haven't had a thread about how a new player discovers Dominions. You could make a report of some sort about how you discover things and such. Something similar to what you posted, few sentences about each memorable game and/or discovery, or how you finally killed the Nords.

Hey, that would be nice if some of te new ones takes the time to do such a thing while he plays :)

His mistakes could even be corrected real-time by the gurus, he would receive a lot of useful tips ;)

Greetings, everyone!

I guess I'm the newest addition to Dominion 3. I found it completely by accident while looking for TBS games (Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is probably one of my favorite games.)

The day I got it I went to bed at around ...4 AM? I've never stayed up that late for anything - not even finals week.

What really made it attractive was not only the sheer amount of depth in the game, but also the modability of Dominion as a whole.

Favorite race? Man. Love their Arthurian-influenced themes. Also, someone's Sylvania Mod was really awesome as well. Hope to see more of you around!

Regards,

Caradryan.

Hello everyone.

Well, I've been itching and warring with myself over whether to get Dominions ever since I tried out the Dominions 2 demo a few years back. Last month I took the plunge and made the order.

My favorite nation has been MA Ulm (a sort of affection left over from the Dom2 demo), and I've gotten the handle of them in SP.

And thus, I move on to MP.

MA Ulm was upgraded in a recent patch, and they have some new national spells only their Priest Smiths can cast.
LA Ulm is a combination of two Dom2 themes: it has both vampire counts and sacred black knights.

MA Ulm got a nice guide recently, and that should help you get up to speed with the few differences. You might also want to read the "Zen of Thugging" thread.

Hi,

This is my first post here. Like doktor, I live in France.

I used to play Heroes of Might and Magic and by looking for something new and deeper, I found Dominions. I bought it two months ago and I love it.

I tried at first a few SP games, and I'm currently playing my first MP game with other french people. I find it pretty scarry cause it can be long and I may die every day, but I enjoy this experience a lot :).

So I would like to thank the developer for this great game, and thank everyone here for all the tips, guides and other priceless stuff you give to newbies like me. I hope to play with you very soon :).

Well, in gaming terms I'm a dinosaur (rapidly approaching 40) having started my computer gaming on a TSR-80, quickly moving to a sweeeet Commodore 128.

I still run a table top RPG game once a week, and have been playing in or running a World of Greyhawk game since 1981.

PC wise, when I'm not playing Dom3, I play World of Warcraft (Horde), a little Darkwind, or Fallout 3.

Have been 'lurking' since I bought Dom3, and have only played single player so far.

Live in the house-of-the-mouse (Orlando, FL) with my wife (whom I met at an Earthdawn game I was running) and my son (gamer in training).

Hello

Got this game some time ago and just got some time to look into it. Wow, it is a wealth of interacting issues. This is terrific.

But, boy am I new. I have version 3.20 or 3.00. There have been many patches and I have no idea how to insert them into my game or how to find them.

Also, how does one deal with glamor units like Helhirdlings?

That is all for now.

Hello to all the newcomers! I'm glad that so many have joined this wonderful game this week :)

About your questions, Hector, I believe you'll only have to download the newest patch from here:

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwint...DOM3_page.html

About how to counter the Helhirdlings Im afraid I don't know. Im still learning since im quite new to this game myself :D
Altough, probably some nice aoe spells would do the trick :)

Endoperez March 13th, 2009 04:41 PM

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Welcome, Joelz, and good guess there! :D

Hector:
Magic is the key. Once you patch, missiles will also work much better. In some patch or other, glamour/mirror image effect was changed to not affect missiles.

Once you can deal damage to the helhirdings, they will lose their mirror image for that battle and your normal troops might be able to handle them. If you have elemental magic, research Evocation (aim for one of: Thunder Strike, Blade Wind, Falling Fires, Falling Frost). If you have Astral, research Thaumaturgy (at least until Mind Burn).

Hi all, I'm Brian from GA, USA. I've just jumped in rather blind and placed an order for Dominions III this afternoon, didn't even feel a need to try the demo after reading through the features and coming across random praise at various forums. Never played, or somehow even been actively conscious, of this kind of game before, but I'm a big Roguelike fan so it appealed to me on the perceived traits of depth and versatility of options for any given situation.

Not sure when I'll actually get around to trying it respective of my backlog of titles, but I look forward to it and will try and follow what goes on here in the interim so that when I do have a starting experience I'll be fully patched up and such for an excellent first impression!

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Well, this is more of a farewell than a hello I'm afraid as I've already played out most of my interest in Dominions 3. First and foremost I enjoy getting a given game to run on obscure hardware and OS although Dominions 3 ran as though it had been developed under Linux :) I followed that 2 minutes of thrill by ~6 months of SP games, jumped into MP briefly (still prefer SP), and then explored modding a little although I was pretty disappointed there.

All in all, I still think Dominions 3 is one of the greatest games I have ever played. It could be the greatest geek game ever if it was open sourced and could get a little more developer attention (I'd be at the front of the line). In the future I will be spending more of my gaming time on open source games (playing and developing), where I can make the changes I want and play the game I want to play. Cost of the game has nothing to do with it.

Oh, about me: I'm a former *nix admin/developer turned farmer. I live in midwest USA, have a beautiful 18 month old daughter, and ... well that's the interesting bits.

Cheers!

Only other one I could think of off the top of my head would be something like Battle for Wesnoth that just hit a big milestone release of 1.6. Who knows, perhaps with future patches and modding, especially since I remember reading somewhere about more mod powers coming down the line over time with future patches, he'll be able to venture back and find that all's well.

Personally, I'm a bit skeptic about that. Modding has already been expanded a lot, and Peg hit all the new limits as soon as he started, and he managed to find things experienced modders didn't know in a very short time. If he finds an open-source project to participate in, he'll be able to do much more than he could with Dominions, regardless of what will be added.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Greetings, all. I've been playing dom3 for awhile now, but never done any multiplayer games(except with my brother) or participated here before. I've honestly spent more time modding than actually playing (some for my brother, some for me). I don't really think I'm terribly good(as a player), mainly because my brother usually beats me unless I'm using a mod of mine that is overpowered because it hasn't been balanced yet.

details about me? I'm male, 21(22 in about a week), an English major at UALR in Arkansas, currently writing a book(fantasy) and working on a rather big mod for dom3. Most people define me as a goth. I don't, though I don't object to it either. I'm very much into music - I sing, play, and am usually listening to something. Lets see...I also have autistic spectrum disorder; I used to be ashamed of it and never tell anybody, but now I don't care. Dom3 is interesting for me because its purely strategy, which is more difficult for me than say...WoW where I can learn a few basic things, then just focus and be pointlessly good. I'm also a runner (started 2 or 3 months ago) - 15+ miles a week. working it up at the moment, recently broke 7 minute mile(yay!). I have an incredibly ability to pick the stronger races/classes/whatever when I first play a game. My first game was LA ermor, and when I got tired of owning the computer in LA, I decided to play a different era, and picked EA Neifleheim with a nature/earth bless to play against my brother's Sauromatia (I actually won that game. He tried to counter me with heavy cavalry and leprosy. I'm not sure why he tried that, cause he knows better).

Me and my brother a while back decided to make our own rules/creatures for the tabletop game Warhammer, so I started inventing the world it would take place in. I brainstormed different races I could use that would have armies for this tabletop game, and after a while I decided to build the lore to it. Well, I ended up really liking this world, so I decided to write a book that takes place in it, and at the moment, I am also making a dom3 mod of it. That is my major project here at the moment. I finally registered here because I just got into sprite modding yesterday and made a few I was hoping for advice on (putting in appropriate thread).

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Eventually I will probably do something with them. At the moment I'm rebalancing about 7 nations against one another and struggling with the magic being too strong. I'm not sure what to do with it. me and my brother have played a bit, and it tend toward it being really easy to smash people if you stick enough mages in your army. I've one nation that has summonables that can cast banefire, so i played as them, expanded in the beginning, then set my recruitable blood mages to blood hunt, 3 per province in about 5 or 6 provinces with zero taxes, then spam-summoned those banefire casting mages...and attacked his army with 86 of them and a screen of arrow-fodder and my recuirable mages casting blood burst. it took me a long time to get that many, but press fast forward and I had a banefire machine gun. Now, he could have stopped me by attacking sooner - he was letting me test out my nation - but that was silly. I am however, going to increase the cost of those guys. by a lot. At the moment I'm taking a break from gardening - am planting some roses. I have to admit though...if you tried to play like I did in an MP game, you would be killed too fast. I was pretty weak early on.

Hello all! I've been a long time lurker here and short time poster :) A little bit about me, I'm almost 30, I live in the UK and I'm self-employed - nothing too interesting but it pay the bills. I used to be a big RPer when I was younger, graduating to PBeM when it became increasingly difficult for PnP games. I actually prefer email/forum RPing as I love to write. I maybe could have been a writter in another incarnation but in this one I'm too unfocussed for anything other gaming. I can't live without music and movies and I'm always listening to or watching something. My tastes are incredibly diverse in both.

I've yet to try my hand at MP in Dominions. I'm not sure how quickly those games progress (tbh I don't know that much about the MP side of things). I still don't feel I know enough of the game to take anybody but noobs at MP. I've played a rook of SP games and still know hardly anything of the game! I struggle to get past mid-game usually as I get distracted by starting another game with another nation :D Too many variations to try and not enough time to do it all! I love generating random maps and seeing how that affects my progress - a couple random magic sites or terrain placements can affect your game massively. I love it!

Anyways, just wanted to say hello :)

Welcome to the community. As far as pacing goes, it can depend on the game. Most go 24 hr turns for the first 20-30, but occasionally someone makes one that goes faster or slower. And don't worry about lack of XP, it can soon be remedied. :D
