David:
Those Last animated ones are wicked.

Do you have the original picture used for the primitive avatar (or a link or search tip)? I have tried google, but I can't find it. Have some nice ideas to animate the avatar, but I would need a better quality picture to work from.

I think my name says it all!

I know I'm new here, but I love this freaking game already (another disappointed MOO guy) and I plan on being here a long time.

A BL avatar would truly serve the whole community, as he is beyond compare as a role model and overall cool guy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm sorry to say that I don't have the original pic any more. But I do remember that I didn't do much if any resizing. (so if you were hoping for a larger pic, the bulk of the pic was a full-body shot of conan, I clipped his face!) It was from the cover of a conan comic I found while searching for "Marvel comics" +conan The page had a whole lot of comic book covers and wallpapers.

If it's any help, the search engine I used was..

Image Search

Had a look, but I did not find it. Got most off those old comics stowed away in the cellar somewhere, so maybe I can find the original there.

Thanks anyway.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I use my favorite paint program (Artgem!, which is sadly no longer available.) and 'Gif Movie Gear' which has a function to import .gif filmstrips which is basically a standard .gif that has all the frames laid out side by side vertically or horizontally. Most of the 'other' animated gif programs force you to save all the frames individually and load them one by one!

Do a search for "animated gif software" you should find several. Microsoft has one that is free, but I never used it so I can't give coments. (although my brother and nephew both use it and seem to like it.)

I hope this helps.

P.S. I feed my avatars with anims I find all over the net! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Just testing how this one looks compared to the current Version.

[Edit]It lost too many colors in the conVersion to GIF. What I actually wanted was to find somewhere I could upload a png (as that is the original file format) and use that as the avatar, instead of gif or jpg. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [/edit]

Re: OT: The House of 1001+ Avatars

Fyron, I just grabbed the bigger .jpg you posted, I'll see what I can do with that. If you want me to work with the original .png just send me an e-mail and attach it!!

Cheers!

Edit: Ok, here's the result of a wee bit of fooling around with the larger .jpg...

First a comparison with a gif and a jpg (set at minimum compression to retain as much detail as possible!)
1047900409.gif
1047900435.jpg

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1047900409.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1047900435.jpg
.gif .jpg

..and here is a .zip with a .bmp, .png, .gif, and .jpg! Fyi, I have a great program for reducing pics and I could not notice any diff in the .gif compared to the original .bmp (16m colors!) the .png was saved at 16m colors too!!

1047900459.zip

The .jpg is the most 'notably' different. (but that is to be expected due to the type of file compression used in a .jpg!)

Let me know what you think! Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

P.S. are you aware the your current avatar pic is being distorted? the resizing being done (by the Shrapnel host) does not preserve the aspect ratio. If you look close you'll notice that your current avatar has a 'fatter' head. If you don't mind the distortion, I could do a resize without preserving the aspect ratio too! (I mention this because when comparing my avatar's to yours Mine looks a bit smaller, but that is the result of the distorting. Closer inspection will show you that the 'height' of the heads is the same. But I digress, sorry!

P.P.S. scaling without 'preservation' looks like this! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

1047901744.gif
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1047901744.gif

...wait a min, it looks like your avatar pic has been cropped first! hmmmm grrrrr! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

...one more little edit.. here is one cropped resized, slightly brightend (2%), a 5% color boost (saturation), and a 10% sharpen to bring out just a bit more detail that was lost in the reduction process...

1047902785.gif
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1047902785.gif

Cheers!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Here is a repost of a message where I explained how to do it..

First click on the link to the pic you want (back a few pages in the forum) Then in the new window that opens click in the address window at the top of the page and highlight the URL.. press ctrl-c to copy the url to memory,.. then close the window to go back to this forum.. click on the 'my profile' link next to the intel forums logo (top right) on you profile page, click on 'view/update' profile.. near the bottom of the profile page is an option to choose a new avatar pic. somewhere on the next screen is a place for the url, click in the box and press ctrl-v to paste the link in, choose select this url or some such and voila, Oh and don't forget to select 'update profile' at the bottom of the page before you leave.

In the above example the URL you want to paste is..

Hello David, I would like you to make better Version of my avatar like you did with tons of other avatars but without polish please, here is the avatar. oh and could you send me a private message to tell me when it'll be ready. No need to hurry, i dont mind if i dont get it soon. You are doing a realy good job. I try to be a computer artist but my talent will never equals your's!

Thank you very much !
Justin

edit: and also if my calcules are well , to keep the same pixels at the same place and the character in the center, a line of 3 pixels should be removed from evry of the 4 sides.

Thank you
Justin

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What specifics are you referring to? Size? The size has to be, IIRC, 48 by 48 pixels.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I dunno. I once made some decals for Mechwarrior mechs and they had to be certain dimensions, filetype of Targa, and total file size was limited to something like 3 or 6k.

So, I was just asking if there are any specifics like that. If it's an annimated gif, it can vary quite a bit in size. Also, the question I had about where it gets stored. Or uploaded. Any restritction on transparancey? Any naming conventions required? Is png allowed?

I did a search and didn't have much luck. The FAQ didn't discuss it. So, I thought I'd ask.

PS: What does IIRC mean?

IIRC = If I recall Correctly.

The shrapnel uploader doesn't allow PNG's, but does allow GIFs, BMPs and JPGs. The list is shown in the upload window.

PS: filesize limits are in the multi-megabyte range, since the uploader is used for shipsets and mods too.

A few pages back there was a link to a free GIF animator, I used it to make mine

Microsoft GIF animator

First you got to one of These Boards and click post reply. then on the left you will see a link to upload files, follow the steps and copy the link it gives you at the end. Then go into your profile and click the link to change your Avatar. in that link there is a space to put a URL to a custom avatar. Paste the link from the upload form, save the changes and you have your new Avatar. I hope I helped. If someone could explain it better you can try.
