Re: OT: The House of 1001+ Avatars

Specifically speaking,.. the avatars are 48x48 pixels, the file format can be .gif or .jpg. Yes shrapnel does permit the uploading of .bmp's but this file format is not supported for avatars.

You can use a larger sized pic and the image will automatically be rescaled to 48x48, but I found it best to do the reducing myself rather thatn leave it to the forum software.

As for file size, most if not all my gifs are 3k or less. the animated gifs are generally under 24k (I don't plan on posting too many of these!)

Cheers!

Re: OT: The House of 1001+ Avatars

Yeah, David, transparency turned out being a bit tough. Well, not the actual transparency part. I wanted just the initials (which I post on my artwork...well, that's what I call it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ). But when I gif'd it, it left a white-gray border around the edges of the letters...anti-aliasing, I'm guessing...but it was ugly. I tinkered with it to get just the black stroking on the lettering to appear, but to no avail. I changed to a lavender background for it and it looked OK. But I still wanted just the lettering to appear. That's when I tried copying the background color here (not noticing that it alternated when reading Messages http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )

I sure wish I had a cure for the "ghosting" of the edges, though, since I'd really like to have it by itself. (I saw one somewhere that someone had like that and it didn't have "nasty" edges.

Tks for the tip and comments!

Well, it's not like I'm a freehand artist or anything, so I have to use tools to help me. 3D objects (purchased) and "arranged" in Poser (app) and rendered in Vue d'Esprit (app). Then a little "juggling" in Photoshop.

I'm not very good at it, but it's passable. But doesn't compare to lots of others that I've seen.

Tks for the quiet laughter... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Slynky, make the background color transparent. That will make it blend in on every post.

David E. Gervais March 23rd, 2003 11:50 PM

Re: OT: The House of 1001+ Avatars

Fyron, Slynky's avatar has too many semi transparent pixels caused by the 'anti-aliasing' so setting the green background color to transparent doesn't look good. still too many 'dark' color pixels floating around. (I know I tried!)

I would suggest that the simple solution would be to make a new Version and place it on a black background or some kind of dark gradiant.

I used another option with the 'polished' avatar I did for Slynky I kept close to the existing colors and thought it turned out ok, but I'm sure Slynky has the original font/artwork and could do just as good a job.

nuf said! Cheers!

Edit: perhaps just a color change?...

I think I've confused things, sorry.
By "badge", I meant more of an award-patch type thing, and not a new Job-Badge (like the minister, senator, etc ones you made earlier).

Tesco is still going to have the job-badge of "Armchair General" (or similar), but he will be given the explorer patch to add to his signature along with the ribbons, medallions and other awards he is sure to collect during his carreer.

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1048860238.gif
I like it. It just needs the background transparent and a bit of a cropping to make it into a patch instead of a badge. Would a starry sky in the triangle show up at that size?

I don't recall if its already been done (and can't check from here), but the eyeball looks like a good idea for an intel minister badge. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Ooh! Very nice.

I've plugged in the Eye, and the PH, and this one:
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1048879194.gif(Given for extraordinary defense of something or someone important)

I'm thinking the crown ones would be good for ground combat related achievements. (They remind me of facilities for some reason http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

I'm not sure if you intended some of those to be used in a series, such as:

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1048879248.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1048879181.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1048868404.gif

Like a bronze, silver and gold Star/Cross/etc medal for varying degrees of achievement in some Category.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">- Yep. Captain Tesco has just done some exploring http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
- Same style, new shape (players should be collecting quite a few of these type of things and will need room to string them together).
- Either will do. I'm leaning towards the badge at the moment, since it isn't as spectacular as the potential combat medals.

Oh, and in this particular case, I think a transparent background would be best.

..I built myself a simple little medal case to hold all the medals. (and it gives you the chance to see them all without scrolling down the thread!)

I'd like to place an order for one display case full, for my office wall. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Those look really great. I don't know if we'll have enough awards to use them all! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I know, I know, David doesn't hand-draw these medals... but can't avoid to feel myself amazed looking his work. And much more, if remember my own skills using any kind of software to do images...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't know what you mean by not hand drawn, unlike my avatars which are mostly (but not all) images that I found, reduced, framed and polished, these medals were ALL drawn from scratch. Pixel by pixel one by one, Of course once I had a few bases to work with I did do some cut&paste and recoloring. but all in all, these were not taken from pictures. They all came straight from my head. (There is 2 exceptions, the waypoint medal has an actual waypoint image reduced to fit in the medal and the colonization has a reduced planet which I created long ago in pov-ray!)

Now you have th poop the whole poop and nothing but the poop!

P.S. the proof is in the pudding,.. here is a sample of one of my workscreens (Highly compressed jpeg image not meant for quality, just a visual reference!)..

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't wanted to say that you got it from the web (or something like that!)... just that you used a software tool instead pencil and paper!
Again, want to say that your work is AMAZING! Can't avoid it, when know someone that have the "touch" for the art.

I have a friend that he's GREAT using the CorelDraw (and other software), and using the same software tools... I can't draw ANYTHING!
An example of his work: 1049035676.jpg
(By the way, know you someone that could give him a job????)
