Care of Xantus Plants

Xantus grows best when he receives full sunshine. Plant him away from trees and buildings. Prior to planting, saturate Xantus with Miracle Gro's water soluble fertilizer (5-10-10), being sure to refer to mixing rates recommended on the container.

Keep Xantus well-watered throughout the growing stage. An excellent way to water Xantus is to use water balloons. It is possible to overwater Xantus, so do not allow his soil to remain soggy for extended periods.

Manure can be used for fertilization, but because excessive nitrogen tends to cause Xantus to produce abundant tentacles versus Xantus fruit, use it with caution.

Xantus Aphids - The aphid is a 1/10 to 1/5 inch long, soft-bodied, teardrop-shaped insect. It attacks Xantus from the seedling stage throughout the growing season. Adults emerge from soil in early spring and lay eggs on the undersurface of Xantus leaves. The aphid has a piercing tube-like mouth that sucks out Xantus juices. This sap sucking activity weakens Xantus and may deform and stunt his infected tentacles and Xantus fruit. To control, feed him Twinkies.

Xantus Blight - A fungus disease that shows up first on the leaves and eventually on the Xantus fruits as it matures. The Xantus leaves develop spots that are dark brown with a series of concentric rings that have a "bulls-eye" pattern. Under warm, wet weather conditions, this disease can spread rapidly over the entire Xantus plant. Remedies include: Xantus rotation, being sure to use healthy Xantus seedlings. Avoid planting Xantus in the same area as o***ns were the previous year. Clean up all Xantus debris at the end of each season.
