Re: Online D&D Gaming
So what times are best for everyone?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
...Pretty much any, subject to review.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
We'll have to delay starting again a bit. I'm going to help out my sister in a week or two for awhile so I won't be around.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Hello... Requesting to join your game. Good times for me are Tuesday evenings, Wednesday late evenings, Thursday evenings, Friday evenings. Mondays and Sundays are near-impossible.
So... human bard sound good? Charsheet is up, so please feel free to look it over. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Your'e welcome to join Violist. However we have had difficulty planning a new time (part of me is worried we might not be able to start again). I've never run a bard before, but it'll be good to have someone who can cast healing spells.

Re: Online D&D Gaming
Would Tuesday evening work for everyone?
Violist, I see two problems with your character sheet. You appear to have spent 10 skill points too many, and the +1 magical from your armor should be included in its armor bonus rather than listed separately as a misc bonus. Incidentally, this means it doesn't count towards touch attacks, so your touch AC should be 13. That's it for the actual rules violations, now for some other issues. Why studded leather instead of a chain shirt? The only reason to prefer the leather is the higher max dex, and your dex isn't high enough to be affected by that yet. If you're planning for the long term and thinking about when you'll have gloves of dex +6, just make the chain shirt out of mithril (+2 max dex) and it still won't affect you. The mithril chain shirt actually costs 75 gp less than +1 studded leather, gives the same protection now, and will cost less to upgrade in the future. If a max dex of +4 doesn't bother you, then 75 more gp can get you another +1 AC with a normal +1 chain shirt. You're wielding a one-handed weapon, and only one of them. You should get something for your other hand, like a shield. If you're worried about keeping a hand free for spells with somatic components, keep in mind that a shield can be loosed as a free action combined with movement. If you think you'll be doing a lot of casting and then moving, just get a buckler. If you can wield a weapon in that hand, you can certainly use it for somatic spell components. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Violist, I notice you have a rapier and a dex of 16. I came across a rule once to use dex instead of str for bonuses to weapons like rapiers. I think the other example was scimitars. Maybe it's in the rules, I can't remember. Interested in doing that?

Re: Online D&D Gaming
Randall:
You have to select a feat to do that. I forget the name now. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Weapon Finesse.
So would this three part answer make us Curly, Larry and Moe? |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
The feat is Weapon Finesse, it only applies to attack rolls, not damage, and he's already got it. Hmm, just noticed that a shield's armor check penalty applies to attack rolls when using that, but that's easy enough to take care of. Bucklers and light shields only have an ACP of -1, so the improvement from masterwork quality is enough to nullify it.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
So, is Violist's character anything like Elan?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Aargh. You know, I think I'll stop creating characters with Redblade and just do it by hand... I really hope my character isn't quite as dumb as Elan, but that seems to be how it's working out.
The Studded Leather instead of Chainshirt? I didn't see chainshirt, updated that a little bit ago. I'll go over the sheet with a fine-toothed comb in a bit, right now, gotta scramble in case I miss the bus to morning classes. Tuesday evenings are great for me, they're the most free evening. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Tuesday evening is fine for me. 1700 PST? 1800?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I don't think I have anything on tuesday evenings.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Either one is fine with me... from the size of the logs, I'm guessing your sessions are about an hour long?
Charsheet updated, should take care of the various issues and stuff. Suddenly my wizard in the other game seems fragile... XL15 and 17 AC... and here, XL6 with 21 AC... hah. |

+1 Chain Shirt only gives a total armor bonus of +5, but you have +8 listed. Even if you included the bonus from your shield in that (you shouldn't, that's a shield bonus), it's too high. The shield only gives +2, for a total of +7 combined armor and shield. Also, the shield bonus should be counted towards your flat-footed AC, making it 17. You do not have the requisite 8 levels in the Fighter class to take Greater Weapon Focus, so you need to replace that with something else. If you would go back to Weapon Finesse except for the armor check penalty applying to attack rolls, just make the shield out of darkwood to get rid of even a heavy shield's -2 ACP. It only costs 100 gp extra for a heavy wooden shield. I just checked, and Bards unfortunately do not ignore spell failure chance from shields. This may or may not matter to you, but if you want to be able to have no spell failure while still gaining a shield's AC bonus at the same time, you'll have to get it made out of mithril (which also gets rid of the ACP, btw). Even then, you'll have to make it a light shield or a buckler to get rid of the last 5%, though you might just ignore that as insignificant. Getting rid of the Ring of Sustenance would provide the necessary funds to pay for the mithril, and that ring really isn't all that important. Hmm, I just noticed that none of the bonuses from your Persuasive and Stealthy feats are reflected in the misc colulmn. I think they got added in the ranks column just like what happened with Magical Aptitude and Kaylin's character sheet. Factoring that in, you actually spent the correct amount of skill points the first time, you just need to correct which column the four +2 bonuses from feats go in. I'd suggest replacing Persuasive with Negotiator. You have pretty much nothing in bluff and intimidate to help the Persuasive +2 bonus in those skills do much, but Negotiator's +2 to diplomacy and sense motive would help out two skills you've focused on with your skill points. Stealthy also isn't a very good choice without also putting lots of skill points into hide and move silently, so I'd suggest replacing it with something else. In general, feats that give bonuses to skills are usually only worth it if you have a lot of ranks in the skills in question. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
*swearword* I thought I took out greater weapon focus... I saw that, knew it was wrong... *grumble* oh well, thanks for going over it. Argh, this will drive me insane again.

Re: Online D&D Gaming
Wednesday morning (tuesday evening) is fine for me, however this week I may be busy moving furniture. I'll let you know.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
/me eats the furniture.
Problem solved. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Just so you know, I am moving stuff tomorrow.Maybe we can try for next week.

OK, hope this charsheet meets with everyone's approval?

Re: Online D&D Gaming
You're getting there. Just a few minor nitpicks and some mechanical problems with how you entered it into OpenRPG left.
I count 69 skill points spent out of 72. You have no ranks listed for Perform (Singing), while previous versions of your sheet had 3 in that skill. Perhaps that's where the missing points are supposed to be? Speak Language (Dwarven) is listed, but with no ranks. Are you spending a skill point on it or not? You'll have to take the point from somewhere else if you do, though. You have one too many languages listed at the bottom. Have you been playing elves for too long and forgot that humans don't get Elven for free? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Bluff should have +2 Misc from Persuasive, while I can't find the source of the +2 Misc you put for Gather Information. Bards are spontaneous casters, which OpenRPG isn't set up to handle very well. You should probably do something like I did with Elorin, adding "Level 1 Spell" and such to your list in OpenRPG (will require xml editing), and using them to keep track of spell slots remaining. The actual spells should then all be set to a really high number prepared each day so that it's always the "Spell Slot Tracking Device"s that run out first. You appear to have entered your attack bonuses incorrectly in OpenRPG. In OpenRPG, double-click on your character's node and go to the Weapons subsection of the Combat section. There should be two tables there. In the top table (first column "Type") enter your base attack bonus of +4 in the "base" column for both rows. In the bottom table, for each individual weapon enter only the modifiers that apply specifically to that weapon in the "damage" and "To hit mod" columns. The damage for your rapier should be 1d6+1 there, OpenRPG will automatically add your strength bonus when it rolls that attack. The to hit mod for your rapier should be +4 (+1 magical, +1 Weapon Focus, +2 Weapon Finesse). You can edit the names of weapons and armor directly in OpenRPG, there's no reason for your rapier to not be noted as +1 in the attacks section or for your +1 mithril chain shirt to be described as an ordinary chain shirt in the armor section. You may have to restart OpenRPG before it will notice these changes, however. Hmm, you still have a fair amount of money for mundane stuff left, why don't you make that shortbow masterwork with a +1 strength bonus for 375 gp? Masterwork adds +1 to hit, and the +1 strength will allow you to apply your strength bonus to damage (you'll have to include that in the damage field, unlike with the rapier). Edit: I was checking spells to decide which one to recommend dropping for Cure Moderate Wounds (like it or not, you are the party healer here), and discovered that Spectral Hand is Sor/Wiz only. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Always something, isn't there... I just realised I forgot to list the skill points for the two Speak Language ranks I took.
The +2 to Gather Information is from me not being able to follow a straight horizontal line in a table, and misreading the Skill Synergy entry for Knowledge(History) as Knowledge(Local). Spectral Hand is in there for no apparent reason as that should be Cure Moderate Wounds. Sorry I didn't check totally carefully, I did this just before I had to dash off to class. Thanks for the tips with the weapons stuff... I almost always play Wizards, but since you have Lae'nal already, I figured I'd try Bard... |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
So, everyone ready to start this week?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Starting this week is fine, though I'm still unconfident with using weapons... no complains about the (hopefully) final version of character sheet?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
So I can make sure of time differences I am posting the current time 12am (midnight)
Edit: I'm not sure, is the forum PST or EST?. I suppose someone can tell me how many hours, and thus what time in the morning, after midnight I should start. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I'm happy with your equipment. You sure do have a lot of skill ranks, but it's too late for me to work it out and I'm happy to trust. I notice you know elven, that'll be interesting to work in.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Bards and humans get quite a few skill points...
Level 1: 4 * (int modifier + 6) + 4 = 4(1 + 6) + 4 = 32 2,3,4,5,6: 6 + int modifier + 1 = 6 + 1 + 1 = 8 By my timezone (PST), you posted at 5 AM. |

Besides that, I've only got an organizational suggestion: You've already got your spells known sorted by spell level. Now, move each of your "Spell slot trackers" to the beginning of the appropriate section, so that they split up your spell list into easily seen sections by spell level. Besides making it easy to see almost at a glance what level any spell in your list is, this will ensure that whichever spell slot tracker you need to use is always close in the list to the spell you're casting - just go up the list from the spell you're casting to the first spell tracker you find, and that's it. Our standard time is 5 PST or 8 EST, which used to be 10am for Randallw. Now that Daylight Savings Time has ended/begun (it goes opposite ways north and south of the equator), the same time for those of us in the US is now noon in Australia. Congratulations Randallw, you get to sleep in a little more! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif. Hmm, is this enough that you won't need to skip your meds to get up in time? |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Fixed, sorted. Thanks for all your help http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Re: Online D&D Gaming
So... is it confirmed that we are playing tomorrow (today)?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Yes indeed. I changed my computer time to PST and by my calculations 1700 was 8 hours ago, so by the looks of it I'll start tomorrow at midday for me and that should be right.

While getting ready I thought of working on my map. Wasn't sure if I've shown it before. Anyway I didn't do any changes, the idea being I build on the map as we travel, but anyway I thought the rough draft might be useful.
Addendum. The last campaign moved around the penninsula in the middle of the map. YOu might just be able to make out the glacier as a white bit. At the moment I can't work out how to take a picture of a small section. I have an idea I'll try tomorrow. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Excellent. I shall be quite interested to see how you manage to get me in the middle of a seige... perhaps I was a wandering minstrel, floating around inside the castle?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Was just about to go to bed when I realised something. It would be a big help if someone could tell me where there is any information in the core books on wages for working for people eg. how many gp a day you get paid for certain work. I'm too tired at the moment to work it out myself at the moment but it is a bit important for the game.

Re: Online D&D Gaming
Server's up. Narf and Violist, we're waiting for you.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
You know, Lae'nial would have made a good arcane archer.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Take 3 levels of Fighter, and he still can. Of course, that is rather a ways off, and I think the most effective Arcane Archer builds usually don't bother with many Wizard levels...
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
"Effective builds?" What is this, a MMORPG? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
No...A MMORPG.
A Minimally Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Everyone set for this week?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Yes.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Sure... I'll need to practice my roleplaying skills some more...
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Not quite yet, but if you come back in a few hours, it should be quite solid.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Some bad news. My brother in law is being rushed to the hospital, so I will probably be busy tomorrow whether it be going to the hospital or caring for my nephew. Sorry.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Sorry to hear that. Want to tell us what the problem is?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I apparently have to be somewhere til 5:30 or so. With Randall being busy, looks like it is postponed?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
He had a high temperature, apparently the medicine for this condition he has means he is more susceptible to infection.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Well, I hope he gets better.
