This suicide squadren ignored the warships, which had to wheel around in formation to destroy them.

Before his attack ships could reach me, my obsolete ships destroyed his repair ships, troop transports, mine sweepers, and sensor ship. That truly made a hopeless game a lot of fun.

With troops, keep in mind that bombardment order has changed. They're now the -Last- cargo to go, so Troop on troop combat will be much more common.

Actually, wasn't the change just that WPs get destroyed first always, and all other cargo gets destroyed in the old method? Still has the same effect though, as ships stop shooting at the planet when WPs are gone (assuming troops are available http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ).

As for the type of mine, I think that once your ships have been in "combat" with enemy mines, those mines will appear in your Enemy Designs view in the design window, right?

As for the number of mines, well, maybe he was guessing based on knowledge of the type of ship that laid the mines - although that should go in multiples of two, shouldn't it, depending on the number of mine bays in the ship? (And if one were able to observe the movements of the mine-laying ship at the time the mines must have been laid, one might be able to know whether the ship had spent more than one turn in that sector.)Otherwise, yeah, I don't think one could know that.

In fact they will stop shooting at the planet as soon as all armed WPs are destroyed. I've captured many planets with intact weapon platform but with no weapons at all or just PDC. In addition, I've captured planets with sats and mines still in cargo.

Re: How Do You Defend Against

As for the original question of how to protect a planet from invasion: try to keep the troops from landing, and have your own troops on planet to fight them if they do land (although your troops will probably be destroyed before he lands if there is any pre-landing bombardmet). As for how to keep the from landing, anything that will kill (or even M-kill at least two squares away from the planet) the troop carriers will do: weapon platforms on planet; mines or fighters or satellites launched by the planet; your combat fleets in the sector.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Maybe this should go in a new thread, but this is incorrect. I have seen it posted before and it's possible in previous Versions it was correct, but as far as 1.84 goes it is incorrect. If multiple empires place mines in the same sector it can overload your minesweepers. The number of mines a sweeper can sweep is per turn, not per turn per empire.
