Assuming you use max range... but keep in mind that the extra range means you can get more ships in massive battles able to fire each turn, so the number of hits goes up with the APBs. Even though the range 7 and 8 shots have lower hit rates, they still add to the hits from closer ships.

Yeah, but APBs need to be researched up to nearly the end before they can outdo PPBs. Even then, PPBs still have the extra advantage of bypassing regular shields.
I don't think you'll ever see any APBs on my ships. When I have little else to research, I might put them on large platforms. But, IMO, they are too expensive to research. |

They are too expensive to research for the early game, yes, but not for the mid to late game. Especially on medium or larger maps...
APBs cost a lot less to build than PPBs. Phased shields easily make the shield skipping ability of the PPBs obselete. Just level 3 in phased shields is all you need to start getting powerful defense against PPBs. Such technology is not that hard to research in the mid game. |

Actually, not sure it's a blanket problem. Some weapon tech I never research (I don't think it's worth it). On the other hand, I think PPBs are too cheap. You can actually use them effectively the entire game and it takes quite a bit of research to get the shields to effectively stop them. So, in that respect, PPBs are too cheap.

If you are going to add zero to literally everything, just instead drop a zero off of the research center production. Same effect, much less work!
