Viruses will only disappear when it's no longer business.
Where do you think virus writers get their money from?
Don't support that business.
Never pay for any commercial AV or related software.

While any kid can buy a cheap paint spray and go out to paint some graffiti, writing a really nasty virus requires advanced programming skills and many hours of development and testing.

Sure there will be some frustrated programmers that just angry with the system, but there wouldn't be so many or put on so much effort without monetary incentive.

my impression was that only a few virusses are very advanced.

And in at least a couple cases they have been traced back to frustrated teens.
