Ok, Atrocities, this one is uh, not worth it. It's a computer game. Now, let's count up the types of crimes I'd be charged with if computer games where real. I'm not going to try to count the numbers.

Genocide. (Strategy games)
Tyranny. (Strategy games)
Mass-murder. (Strategy games)
Regicide. (Strategy game)
Treason. (Space combat game, strategy game)
Killing a police officer. (Interstate 76,82)
1st, 2nd and 3rd degree murder. (RPG's, strategy games, theif)
Firing on a police officer. (Interstate 76,82)
Assault. (Many games)
Exceeding the police limit. (Racing games, Guess)
Grand, normal and petty theft. (RPG's, theif)
Breaking and entering. (RPG's, theif)

And I remember making a longer list once. If those where real, I would justly fry.

But those were games. No pixels were harmed in the making of that list. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

And if you were joking, consider yourself whapped. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Make a press speech and simply say
"That's Collateral Damages, I'm sorry".
And then you'll be able to sleep well again.

And what if SEIV wasn't actually a game, but rather a simulation of the current events in a galaxy far away from us? (There is something along these lines described in a good, but I cannot mention it lest I spoil it for you if you happen to read it later on)

"But worry not gentle reader who killed millions of civilians, while even mice have deserted your castle to escape from your dreadful wrath to behold! By reading "A Primer to Statesmanship in the Age of Space travel" that you are currently holding in your royal hands, you shall become a peaceful and enlightened leader, instead of being a "ruthless evil overlord warmonger" as your neighbours presently call you!

For instance, glassing a planet is oftentimes a hassle, as your neighbours may blame you for killing a few billion inhabitants at a whim. Instead of this poor image, you shall consider to become an enlightened leader, dedicated to promote peace and prosperity to the whole galaxy. In the aforementioned example, you are in fact merely removing the awful burden these beings carry, since you are such a benevolent sovereign.

Obviously gentle reader, you will want to capture a few million of these aliens to make your self-centered neighbours understand your true motives. Their purpose ("their" would be either these alien beings or your neighbours, as deemed necesary) will be to serve as examples, since you shall torture and torment them until they regret to be still alive. Thereafter, you are to liberate their brethrens by ending their lives at once, since you do not want them to share the same horrendous fate as your captives.

Therefore, your thralls... erh, enlightened thralls, will not fail to notice that you didn't "kill" or "slaughter" (such words are so harsh and do no justice to your serene demeanour) these beings, but instead brought them mercy by releasing them from their agony to come. Likewise, your neighbours shall see the truth in these words, and thus is the proper way to deal with such previously annoying events without being labelled with various dyslogistic terms." As seen in "A Primer to Statesmanship in the Age of Space travel", for the reserved use of all approved leaders in the galaxy.

Hmm, my apologizes for this little digressing. Rest assured I do not share the ideas explained above, although they shall be very useful to explain why I am currently killing one thousand civilians every *second* in one of my games. Alas, the Organic facility increases population too much, and so explaining that the two billion settlers working at a given planet were in fact warriors is quite difficult.

I feel horrible as they resisted my ground troops and ultimately my fleet had to obliterate the planet.

All they wanted to be was good friends, and I glass their Home World. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I feel horrible now.

For you and them.

The worst part is that it happened accidentally. Ooops they fought off our invasion. Fleet "therefore" bombs defenseless planet to dust. Sigh.

I did something similar once, basically beat up RaceA till the point where they only had one planet. Enter RaceB: Warmongering and bloodthirsty. They come into the system, ignore my fleet there and bLast the hell out of the Last of RaceA's worlds. Farewell RaceA.

I felt really bad about that, so I went after RaceB, swearing to bring them to justice for what they'd done (but it was perfectly ok for me to nearly destroy RaceA, because I was the one doing it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif ).

Someone who does not find WOMs after an offensive war must feel the same (plus he should say bye bye to politics immediately).
