in the strategy definition, there is a setting that lets planets break formation.

Hey Jubala! That sounds like a great idea! I'd definitely love to see that happen.

Actually there are a lot of great ideas around. Hmm, some of you guys must know enough about programming.
Has anybody tried to convince MM to make SEIV into an open source game? It could get the most legendary game of all times and stay number one for ever!

I second that! hopefully there are enough programmers interested, and it can be done in a way that boosts MM's proffits.

I think maybe the profit question is not that hard to solve. To be entitled to contribute and program or for gaming you have to buy the "developer's kit". I don't see why the open source variant should be any more problematic in terms of software piracy than the "conventional" variant we have now.
MM's job would then be to put together an official core Version from time to time so that people will still be able to play over the net for example.

Eisanhans, I'm glad you like my idea. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif And I do have a fair amount of knowledge in programming, but I'm not sure I would be up to making actual codechanges to SE4 if it (miracle of all miracles I think we won't see for years to come) became open source since I'm betting we're talking alot of code here. It depends on what language it's in, how it's written (style) and most importantly how well documented it is. Fooling around with another programmers code takes along time. If you just dive in and start changing stuff without really knowing how different parts of the code interact Bad Things can and most likely will happen. And aquiring the knowledge and familiarity with the code needed so you can do that takes alot of time so I doubt there would be many people interested in actually investing all the time and effort needed. But there will always be some and if it one day happens I might even be one of them. Only time will tell. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
