Re: First impressions
Just hope the retail game has a "red line" (story line) in the game, couldn't find it in the demo (only played the demo 5 minutes thou).
And after finishing privateer2 again, i still think no one can get close to privateer2. The game should have been in 3d or an option that sets the game in 3d or 2d. The planets are way to small. |
Re: First impressions
I don't want to imagine how much longer it would have taken Aaron to give the game 3d movement.

Of course, getting the AI to work again might be a little harder. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: First impressions
The cargo you ran over was most likely a mine (diamond-shaped with 2 lights) rather than a cargo container. Oh wait - that's not what you had mentioned... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
You can click on the cargo before you collect it to see what it is you know...not to mention that you can jettison it too if you'd accidently picked it up illegal cargo by mistake. I'd for one expect that you couldn't run into other objects. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif |
Re: First impressions
It isn't just graphics though. The collision would have to be revamped (currently, you only colide with objects on the plane), controls would have to be -totally- re-done, as the current system simply wouldn't work.

The biggest impact would be on the AI for the NPC ships. They don't know how to fly in three dimensions, and they have no strategies for attacking in three dimensions. All of the weapons would need to support elevation deflection as well as azimuth. Guided missiles would need seeker algorithms that work in 3D. That kind of stuff will take longer than a couple of weeks. How much longer depends on how sophisticated a set of algorithms you want to have. I don't think it would really add anything significant to the game, though, any more than adding 3D movement would make Chess or Checkers better. Starfury has an elegant and approachable simplicity as it is. |
