Master smiths are research 5 even in drain 3, and only cost 140 gold each. They are almost as efficient as sages in high drain areas. Ulm has no problems with gold early on, and can afford to build a master smith every turn. </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Very true in early game, but by turn 25+ you get so much useful things to forge that you have problems keeping up pace with others in Research !
And if you don't forge and make all smiths research you don't use from your main advantage...
Indy mages don't help much Ulm, their RP get very low due to Drain dom (except if you've found Sages,and even they only have 4 RPs..), and don't have forge bonus neither.
