One possible snafu - I noticed after upgrading a unit that I was told I needed to repair the upgraded component. Unfortunately, I had not yet researched repair!

Ah. But you *do* have a shipyard/spaceyard, or did, anyway -- you needed one to refit. Both the facility and the component can repair damaged components; Repair tech just gets you a smaller, more efficient repair component.

Component: Space Yard 1
repairs at least 3 per turn.

Unless you've got some sort of mod, any space yard will have some repair ability.

Doing that directly is silly.

Start with SY1.

Retro to SY1 +repair comp.
Fix repair comp
Retro to SY3 + repair comp.
Fix SY3
retro to SY3 only.

I did this once by mistake to try and put weapons on a base repair ship that I got from crew insurrection. I needed to put a master computer on it to fit the weapons but the upgrade cost was to much so I think to myself, maybe if I upgrade the shipyard first.....oops.
