Ad-Aware has made their statement regarding the When-U situation. Here's the press-release, decoded from "corporate speak" by DSLR's news guy, Karl:
Decoded Statement

Gandalph: I label Alluria as corrupt because of their dealings with a known spyware-vendor. This is old news.

This is only a natural outcome of the current state of affairs... the RIAA has proven that threat of litigation (aka terrorism) is a valid means of securing revenue. Of course other scumbags will use this same means to continue to rake in their ill-gotten money...

For Gandalph: Dug up the thread about Alluria partnering with... You guessed it, WhenU. This thread is much shorter, only 5 pages. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

WhenU enters the anti-spyware market ...by partnering with Alluria to offer a rebranded version of Alluria's software.

Obviously, a vendor that forms partnerships with crapware vendors isn't to be trusted.

Yeah, I did my own research after seeing the first post, shame I didn't research before purchase. Oh well, buyer beware.

The problem of spyware/adware/malware is an ever increasing dilema. Spysweeper catches stuff that Pest Patrol doesn't. Pest Patrol catches stuff that MS Antispyware doesn't. MS Antispyware catches stuff that Spybot doesn't....ad infinitum. It won't be long before your computer resources are being all used up by programs that look for programs unecessarily using up all your computers resources. Kind of a sickening catch-22 situation.

Indeed both threads should be proof positive that no single product can fully protect you on the spyware front.

On the virus front, however, Kaspersky is pretty much the be-all end-all. But that's another story http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Another disturbing development in the battle against spyware:
Silencing the Critics: ISearch/IDownload

Like the RIAA, crapware makers are turning to lawsuits to try to get their (flawed) message across.

A good summary, for those who are not interested in reading the monster thread about Ad-Aware and WhenU, can be found HERE
