Re: Warp Speed

I have had games where I would load a saved game, and my ships would zip around. I just thought it was the game getting bet use of my processor or something. Then again, I have had games where my ships moved very very very very slowly, and only sped up when I moved the mouse around. So I would have to be zig zagging the mouse every turn to get my ships to move.

Could it be a memorie leak issue?

I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of memory you have. I have nearly a gig of ram in my system. It randomly occurs.
I actually saw it happen in a game I had been playing for 3 hours then al of a sudden they started flying around so fast I had to view each ship to find were it was at.

It is just one of those random things kind of like the little box that appears in the right corner and then you can't get rid of it.

The game is a memory hog! I think that your random speed ups are do to windows freeing up ram from time to time.

Now I have got that problem also. What has changed ? I have upgraded the memory of my PC from 64MB to 192MB (400 Mhz). So I guess it has something to do with system performance.

Mottlee, do you run other background processes (like virus scanner, SETI)? Because it seems you don't always have the problem, maybe sometimes the PC is slowed down by other occupations of the computer.

This is not a big problem (for me), but maybe someone knows how to slow down the ship movement w/o loading several other programs in parallel ?

Me thinks I figured it out....when I have run my modem I get the fast ships so I gues I'll need to reboot a lot http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif

Hey, I guess I have had this problem from the begining. I though that was the speed they were suppose to run at, and it just slowed way down if i started the game without realizing my wife switched CD's. If it is related to system resources, I'm using a 650 Athalon with 256 Megs of ram. From the thread it looks as if the memory may be the anser to this though.

I have a Pent 200MMX 195meg ram I play W/O CD so ??? if that it

This happens to everybody. When it does on my P4, I lose track of some of my ships for a second. Actually I sort of like when it happens because the start of the turn does not take as long when you got 500 ships moving about.

With me, as mentioned in other threads, I can ensure my animated movement is faster if I have my MP3 player on in the background. It's consistent -- and makes absolutely no sense to me. (More processor load = faster animation? Huh?)

I've just been turning off animation. At this point I've played enough that smooth ship movement is the least of my worries.

I know what you mean, Some times the fast is good like was said if you have a lot of ships moving http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Warp Speed

I too have noticed that the speed with which ships movw varies from session to session even though settings remain the same. Funny, I had been thinking about mentioning this phenomenon on the board. I never play with the CD in, the music that came with the game just isn't that interesting. I often copy savegames to a floppy and transfer them to my laptop, where ship movement is invariably faster compared to sessions played using my PC. In my experience the ships seem to move more slowly when the family has left the computer on for a long time. Are you guys saying that if there is something running in the background that the ships move faster? I wonder if running a music CD at the same time would speed up or slow down the ship movement? It would be handy to identify what the factors are that speed the ships up.
