Couldn't agree more! And don't forget the troop transports: Once you have fleets with different ships, it would possible for the AI to successfully capture planets. The strategic combat works perfectely now for the order "capture planet" combined with the order to fire on target till all weapons are gone.

Yep the AI needs to learn how to use combined arms fleets. I don't know how hard that will be to implement but I hope it can be done.

Switched players to see how a few AI's were doing a few games ago and saw a fleet that included Light cruisers and a troop transport ship with 120 troops, they were currently going after another AI planet with this fleet. Didn't think much of it at the time ( sleepy, so sleepy, but must play one more turn! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ), so I never played on to see if it was actually captured. Does the AI include these ships and never use the troops or was this a 'first sighting' of an AI using troops? I have started a new game and don't know if I still have the savegame.

Of course, the AI has to be told to RESEARCH troops, and then told to BUILD them in order to use them! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif I've heard reports of the AI using them before but it would never build very many even if it had the techs. I'm trying to get the Jraenar and the Terrans to use them more often in my own stuff. Some Some of the public modders could work on this, as well. Given that they now have a good effect on planet happiness, they ought to be included in every AI's design to some extent. It might be possible to make the "bloodthirsty" happiness type workable for the AI by using troops. Right now, all of the AIs use "peaceful" because they can't maintain happiness with the others.

Someone, I don't remember who, did a mod awhile back that assigned the minesweeping ability to point-defence cannons. If the AI is having trouble using minesweeping ships in fleets would it make sense to use this idea/mod? Since almost all ships include some form of point defence cannons thanks to mod 1.61 this would make minefields less of a problem for the AI. Or would this make it too easy? Just food for thought.
