Here's an idea for making it more visible against a space backdrop... why not put some sort of glow or border enhancement on the image, so that it sort of looks like an outline of a ship? (That would be a cool effect for cloaked ships too, BTW... the ship with the little dotted circle around it used in SE4 is SO dorky http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif)

I think what you need to do is use a metallic sheen on something that isn't quite black. There is a distinct 'gleam' about the surface of the shadow ships and I don't think a plain black can capture it. Maybe if you blend a very deep 'metallic' purple with black you can get the right look.
