Re: Resources Hack

The Ctrl-Money cheat code will give you all the resources/research/intel points that you need. But, it can be DISABLED while this 'trainer' thing cannot because it's independent of the game. I can only see one real use for this 'trainer' since it duplicates the built-in cheat codes. Unlike the cheat codes (oddly enough) it would let you CHEAT in a game where you weren't supposed to, like competition between humans. I'd avoid it.

When I played BOTF on line, I came to realize real early on that people were using Trainers to cheat. It is a pathetic thing to do, and any one that use one, really show how skilless they are. No offense, I just think trainers are trash, and it angers me that people would consider using them over relying on their skill.

Re: Resources Hack

Trainers have wrecked many an Online game. Anyone who played the first Diablo can attest to this, there were tonnes of hackers/cheaters running around, the company had to spend $$$ to get them out/lessened when it could have spend this on better/more games.

The only thing I can see a use for a trainer here is if it acts like a 'Save Game Editor', for setting up scenarios, NOT as an ingame cheat (ie, suddenly you are facing a ship with range 20 ducs that do 1000points of damage).

This man definitly needs to be shut out/Banned, I do not call for this needlessly, I totally uphold the right of free speech etc BUT things like this ruined Diablo for me, and Online games in general, I don't play Diablo any more Online, I bought Diablo 2 and spent most of my time playing Online 'solo' afraid of running into cheaters/hackers/general idiots.

Lets NOT let this game go that way.

To the hacker, go find a game where people think like you do. We don't, and this game is definitly NOT for you.

Re: Resources Hack

Since in a simultaneous game all the "work" is being done by the host, I'm not sure how effective a trainer would be at cheating if it was being used by one of the players (if the _host_ is cheating then all bets are off, of course).

If it does work, though, perhaps Aaron could add a sanity check to the host to keep an eye on player statistics and see if there're any sudden inexplicable changes since the previous turn? Since the host is the one responsible for processing events, I would imagine that any changes to the game's state that it didn't perform itself would be "illegal." Someone let me know if I'm misinterpreting things, I've never actually played a multiplayer simultaneous game before and I'm not too familiar with the mechanics.

Re: Resources Hack

Ugh

One of the worst things that the existence of cheat utils does to a game community is create a climate of suspicion.

Up until yesterday, I was of the impression that it was not possible to cheat in an MP game of SE4. Today, I know it is.

This really has not contributed to my enjoyment of the game or my peace of mind at all.

I do remember Diablo I, and it truly was a nightmare to play Online, simply because of the cheaters and PK's.

Why did MM put cheat codes in the game anyway? Does anyone use them in their games?

Re: Resources Hack

BeeDee, let me say that SiMove rocks.

I played exclusively turn-based from the time I found SE4 and D/L'ed the demo, (around 60-75 days before the full Version was released), up until I joined Geo's Survivor Tourney over on PBW.

I was profoundly skeptical of SiMove, but now I'm convinced. It really is more exciting even against the computer, and definitely better for MP.

And I would strongly suggest you check out PBW. It works great, just slicker than cat**** on linoleum http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Resources Hack

I expect I will indeed give PBW a shot as soon as the new patch comes out (I've heard that the current Version doesn't work with it due to a bug in command line execution). I've been holding back so far because retrofitting/scrapping/etc. is so badly broken in simultaneous mode. I like to retrofit a _lot_ in peacetime, always keeping my forces cutting-edge. Having to do it one ship at a time is such a pain. But I've been getting myself used to it, and perhaps the next patch will fix that too. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Now that I think about the "cheating" issue more, we've already seen Aaron be quite responsive and quick to close security holes in the past; when he released the map editor he promptly patched the game to disallow saving maps during play so that multiplayers couldn't use the editor to view systems they hadn't visited yet. I'm sure if this trainer becomes a problem there'll be ways to have SEIV verify other players' honesty.
