Re: Rough Speeds.
For a modern example, as a firefighter I recently drove our rescue unit in full emergency response mode on a paved road through our city during a period of very light traffic. Top speed never exceeded 40 km/h due to pavement heaving due to spring frost conditions. Vehicle speed is based entirely on conditions at the time and has nothing to do with published specs of any sort from any source. On that same day I am quite sure my off-road speed would have been much faster and the ride would have been infinitely more comfortable!

Re: Rough Speeds.
Hi Don
Here are some comparisons Ive made. first number is Tarrifs CC speed second number is from panzerworld. Jagdpanzer IV / 70 (V) iv 16 vs 15-18 http://www.panzerworld.net/panzeriv70 Panzer 1 A 16 vs 10-12 Panzer 1 B 18 vs 12-15 http://www.panzerworld.net/pzkpfwi stug 3 24 vs 12-15 http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...rmgeschutz.asp gives 24 for auf b http://www.panzerworld.net/stugiii.html Sturmhaubitze 42 18 vs 12-15 http://www.panzerworld.net/stuh.html Aufklarungspanzer 38(t) 20 vs 20 http://www.panzerworld.net/flakpz38.html Jagdpanzer IV / 48 18 vs 15-18 http://www.panzerworld.net/jagdpanzeriv.html StuG IV 21 vs 15 http://www.panzerworld.net/stugiv.html Sturmtiger 16 vs 20-25 http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...sturmtiger.asp gives 9-12, 15 and 24 note one of his references is Tank Data, Aberdeen Proving Grounds Series, 1968 which may be where tarrifs data comes form. http://www.panzerworld.net/panzersturmmorser.html pz IV flak. ostwind mobelwagon and wirblewind 16 vs 20 http://www.panzerworld.net/flakpanzeriv.html http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...rs/ostwind.asp gives 10 for ostwind and wirblewind 251 21 vs 21 http://www.panzerworld.net/mspw.html panther A 24 vs 20 http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...m/pzkpfw-v.asp gives 24 for auf A panther g 30 vs 20 http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...m/pzkpfw-v.asp gives 15, 16-19, 24 and 30 for auf G http://www.panzerworld.net/panther.html jagdpanther 30 vs 15 http://www.panzerworld.net/jagdpanther.html http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...agdpanther.asp gives 15, 16-19, 24 tiger 1 16 vs 15 http://www.panzerworld.net/tigeri.html tiger 2 20 vs 15-20 http://www.panzerworld.net/tigerii.html Elephant 11 vs 8-10 http://www.panzerworld.net/ferdinandelefant.html Im not pretending this is in any way an exhaustive list just showing why I think Tariffs sites speeds seems credible to me. This site does give quite a few cross country speeds. http://www.wwiivehicles.com/default.asp From this site Ive noticed that the maximum speeds also vary considerably according to references see for example http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...-iv-ausf-a.asp and http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/...iii-ausf-a.asp So maybe the same process that was used to origionally pick between the various maximum speeds could also be used to choose between the various cross country speeds. It might be safe to assume that the higher maximum speeds match with the higher cross country speeds. If enough rough speeds can be found for the main vehicles then perhaps it might be acceptable to guess the cross country speeds for rare vehicles by comparing them with similar vehicles with known cross country speed. Looking at the various models of panzer IV and panzer III it seems that as each model gets slightly heavier so the cross country speed decreases. Probably also important are Horse power, and to a lesser extent gearbox but also I think type of running gear. Best Regards Chuck |
