The dom3 modding scene also trounces the dom2 one royally, if you have any interest in mods/modding.

Yes, modding capabilities have been drastically expanded.

Besides that, the difference in the modding scene is in large part a function of better documentation being available far earlier than was the case with Dom2, which has led to more mods being made. When you look at the Dom2 scene, the number of mods practically exploded after the Dom2DB came out because otherwise it would have been a pain in the arse to get that info.

Compared to release date of the game, the Dom3 DB came out long, long before Dom2 DB did and it is better organized than its predecessor too. It's also going to get more user friendly after the next patch.

Ok...so MP dom as alive and well. That is indeed a reason to buy...but how do I know that within a year they won't put out Dom4 and kill the Dom3 MP (which is exactly what happened to Dom2)?

We have no intention to release a Dom4 atm. We are slowly (although the pace has increased a bit recently) working on another project. So don't worry. Free patches with new content will continue to be released. Next patch is on the way.

Heh, as if there wasn't already an absurd amount of variety in the game.

Thanks Kristoffer - as long as I won't have to drop another $50 in a year or two to keep up with the Dom MP community I'm happy to buy Dom3.
