Well, I guess that makes me pretty outvoted, huh?

The best thing about random events is they often 'break the stalemate'. ie, all empires have built up but no one wants to make that 'first move' and declair war upon their neighbor for fear of another backstabbing them. Then the #1 player has a home system go nova, the #3 player attacks him, the #4 attacks 3 and 2 attacks 4, and so on. Otherwise it can degenerate into a game of 'hunt and kill the AI and then look at each other and wonder who will attack first.'. This is one scenario, the other of course is that everyone just goes for each others throat!! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

My main concern is a question of balance. Suppose someone got thwacked by an event early in the game, while everyone is still building infrastructure, researching early techs, and exploring and expanding. That person would then drop behind the rest of the galaxy through no fault of their own. IMHO, luck is going to play enough of a role in determining starting position (ie home system contents, contents of surrounding systems, proximity to neighbors, etc.). At least on low frequency, it shouldn't happen till the empires have grown up some and can deal with the consequences more effectively.

So far the vote is 2 to 1 in favor of low frequency/catastrophic severity. The polls will stay open till there are is a majority vote or we decide to start the game. And watch out for those butterfly ballots! (Ow, painful flashback....)

The game is on!

And to paraphrase Samuel Morse, "What have I wrought?"

I'm not sure, but I think it is going to eat us for lunch! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/shock.gif

Actually, it should be fun, but I'm not sure how long we are going to live. Survival will be a major accomplishment.

Hi guys!,

I am the Last player added and I have a very important question to ask. I need to know if anyone of you have over 800 racial points in this game. I sent my emp file but was told had too many racial points so I went down to the 800. I realized what I did wrong and if everone has more than 800 points I will be a great disadvantage. Please respond so we can determine what course of action, if any, will be taken.

Thanks for your time
