You could always play two hotseat games on two computers.

That would mean different machine signatures. I would assume that would trigger the protection.

Does it mean then that me and my brother could both join an MP game and play it from the same computer with the same CD key?

yes, exactly. you'd best use different DOM3_CONF / DOM3_SAVE directories then, though. search for that word for more info. otherwise you'll either have to juggle with the savegames through renaming, or you need to always enter both passwords.
