K, in addition to encumbrance penalty, swamp also reduces defense by 2 unless the unit has swamp survival.

The only thing you have to watch for when you stack castles closely is to ensure that you don't reach or exceed 100 administration on an adjacent province with key independent recruitables, primarily a mage with paths you don't have in your national lineup. Or longbowmen for a nation without archers.
