basic OS PnP mouse drivers are all you ever need. most mice dont come with drivers (fancy ones come with config programs and company-propoganda crap programs), much less will they ever have upgrades to them.

How have you managed to be a software engineer for a decade without running into the concept of "bit rot"?

A "basic OS PnP mouse driver" is still a driver that can become corrupt over time. If you don't want to "update" the driver, you should at least try reinstalling it.
