Eh, maybe if you're one of those people that can stand the idea of multiplayer turn-based strategy, the idea of being able to assign all nations in a game to human control might be obvious. For people like me, though, that's definitely an obscure option, and if I don't know it exists I can't use it to create a reference game.

It takes some time for the remnants of the prophet's power to leave the world. 5-6 turns usually, and then you can anoint a new one. You'll get a message when it's time.

I believe it's six months before you can appoint a new one. You'll get a message.

There is (was?) a bug where you were never allowed, but it's very rare.

This is one of the (admittedly rare) cases where the info can be found quite easily in the manual. Look in the Glossary for prophet and read the text for the "Become a prophet" command.
