Re: Commander on hold

Also bear in mind that troops set to Guard Commander will try to do just that. Even when the commander charges into battle, they'll try to stay around him and will only attack when they happen to wind up next to an enemy. They won't spread out and engage nearby enemies like troops on attack will.

How about putting the commander on Holdx5, retreat? As long as you have other commanders on the field, the guarding troops should default to attack when he leaves the field.

Unless they're tramplers. Tramplers will lurk by their commander until somebody gets next to them and then trample as much as they can, sometimes winding up 4 or 5 squares away from the commander.

Speaking of tramplers, I always see in the 'Forge Magic Items) boots that "are so heavy ect, ect," but the gist of it is that these boots worn on a commander (or anyone I guess) make him trample opponents like a Giant. Is this true, and if it is I take it its only if the commander charges onto the fray.

What if he is defensive and has the boots?

Will that help him fend off large Numbers?

Re: Commander on hold

When hostile units are in his zone of control (i.e. adjacent), and they are smaller than him, he will not attack with his weapon. He will trample them instead, as described in the manual, making a number of trample attacks which varies with the number of size classes he is larger than them. (4 size classes larger = ~5 attacks I think.) By "defensive" I think you mean "set to None or Stay Behind Troops." He will still trample troops near him, he just won't run toward them like he would on "Attack".

Trampling will not usually help lone commander against large numbers of troops, because he takes Encumbrance points of fatigue with each trample. That means he'll trample maybe 10 squares at most (2-3 turns) and then get critted by all the swarming troops, and die. The exception is a commander with either 0 Enc or low Enc and lots of reinvigoration.

This is getting a bit OT, but does anyone know how the Boots of the Behemoth actually work?

You see, they definitely allow size 2 commanders to trample size 2 enemies, and quite effectively I might add. So I haven't tried many variations, but putting those Boots on a size 3 like a Caelian would let him trample cavalry? I think size 2 even can with the Boots, I can't recall. And what about a size 4 Agarthan? Can he then trample Elephants? It's so confusing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

If they're allowing size 2's to trample other size 2's, then it's either a bug, or a specific but undisclosed feature, since they're only supposed to add basic Trampling to a given unit.
