I've put Stingers on helos (USMC AH-1's commonly carry a pair of Sidewinders) primarily for anti-helo work.
And was rather pleased when they sometimes shoot at opposition aircraft as well.

The disadvantage is that 1 weapon slot has to be cleared to make space avaiable

As in real life more or less. you cant put all the missi;les and bombs you want on a plane you have to choose according to the mission.
Still i think that an F16 or F15 with sidwinders and mavericks lets sa is a very nice unit to have. it can attack your enemies tanks and his helicopters.
