Well, how important is it to you to capture an opponent's planet intact? In an espionage-free game, it might be quite useful since it's the only way to take an intact colony from an unwilling (if you consider surrender, rather than fighting to the death, as a willful choice) foe? If planets are scarce (say, Ancient galaxy) this may matter even more.

If you want to expand rapidly conquering planets is the best way (except making them surrender as you said): You get planets with facilities and the population, who may even allow you to colonize different atmospheres. And it is much more effective than intel operations IMO because with intel operation the planet might just riot and get independent but not joining your empire. And in my experience the failure rate of "puppet political parties" is quite high too. So I use this only for planets, where I suspect lot of units on it, or when my attack with troops has failed or I have no troops available.

Well... I havn't played in abit... but I remember clicking on the planet and there they were just like WPs.

Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me though. Sometimes it does that.

I suppose when I get outa work I will load up a game and check into that and make sure I'm not just spouting rubbish, since I normally play strategic combat and so its been awhile since I would have done that manually.

Ok... I must have imagined the whole thing because I can't duplicate what I thought was troops shooting into space. maybe I had some mixed wps in there or something and it threw me off. Whatever the case it doesn't seem like you can use troops to shoot into space... BUT you should be able to. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

Yes, it would be cool to have that back. Would also be cool to have the "Robotech" vehicle that can be either a troop or a fighter. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Alright I am convinced. I will alter my gaming style and try it.

Maybe do a classic French style assult. Flank assults on systems and destroy planets and then troop assults up the middle system to gain ground.

But only if that ground is good ground. Like it has a black hole behind it or something. Take a few planets and drop a nebula down and bring in the weapon platform barges and fill the planets up with defences.

Or something.

Now if only the enemy lets me do that.

I will try it thought.

I always just gassed planets.
