You triggered my curiosity, so I googled it. Link on quote. Sir Francis Drake 1540–1595. |

I'm not convinced that "wiki.answers" is a credible source. However, "no guts no glory" does have a certain Shakespearian feel about it. Shakespeare and Drake lived in England at the same time. I found a source that says a Major in the USAF 'popularised' the quote in WWII. :D http://www.taphilo.com/history/quotes.shtml |

It’s a good quote though.
Myself, I’m a big fan of Patton. And he got some great ones. |
Re: Sacrifice-Isn’t war hell…
this thread reminded me of my cruel tactic when i tried to play a long campaign as russians (i think i had a core force of around 2 battalions) before i started my german campaign. i would buy a conscript company or 2 during the finish phase of war(very cheap) on any delay/defense mission then would spread them on the most forward positions with a bit of my core armor covering them. when the finish infantry charged me i delayed them a bit with those forward units, they would usually amass and then i withdraw the armor and cover the whole position with those nasty russian 200mm+ guns. the conscripts go to paradise while taking lots of finish troops this way.
in my german campaign i don't use this method since i don't possess such amount of artillery :< |
Re: Sacrifice-Isn’t war hell…
I just finished a battle (delay, 11/41 Stalingrad) where I got my butt handed to me on a silver platter. I had to pull back all of my forces before they were decimated. Even with that, I had over 50% loses in my core. :hurt:
The worst bit was when a unit would get pinned down right in front of the advance or right next to an immobalized enemy tank. I couldn't just leave them there to get slaugthered (there's my attachment of my units showing) so I mounted rescue missions. Overall, I tried rescuing 6-8 different squads and I only had 16 total. It was a fun battle, even if I did lose. As always learned a lot. (I'll be posting it in "letters from Stalin's City"). I took twice as many of theres as they took of mine. Ha! I was very happy with that marginal defeat! |
