It would work a lot better with multiplayer.

With the AI, you basically get the extra income plus a Soviet style "Iron Curtain" bufferzone between the real enemies and your homeland http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Humans could sabotage your defenses and help your enemies even under a subjugation.
