I had the same error capnq did, but on a Win2K machine. Had to do a clean install of SE4 & patched directly to Version 1.49. I started a game just fine, but I haven't even finished turn 1 yet, so I don't know if there are problems lurking.

Thank you MM for the e-mail and the solution. I downloaded the patch again directly from the MM site, erased (totally) the se4 files, re-installed and then re-patched with the new download.
