It's definitely not meant to be mindless; see the description of its will searing itself into your soul. Lifeless/inanimate is debatable. Note that the elemental royalty are neither mindless nor lifeless. Do you have a reason to suggest this other than for flavor reasons?

That's to reset the castle defense bonus obtained by copystatting the Maker of the Maze (to get the golem lord attribute.) I tried zero first, which didn't seem to work. Not sure if that leaves a net -1 malus, but in the grand scheme of things it will be negligible either way.

If you do it in one step, it doesn't overwrite the OKLEADER attribute from the copystatted unit (Leo.) This is actually a documented bug. Doing it in two steps seems to work.

Unfortunately, the heretic tag never made it in (it had been listed as a planned improvement in the changelog at one point), or I wouldn't bother with the copystatting.

Thanks, that was the first (and definitely quickest) sprite I did :-)

Is just that fire doesn't seem to "have a mind".
When something burn it just burn, you don't see a pattern in it; maybe with an example it's simpler to explain:
a river does not have a mind, when i drown it's not river decision.
the goddess of the river, who makes murder drown and righteous live, she has a mind.

The pillar is more like the goddess of the river than the river (in my conception.) It's not just any old fire, it's the unique Pillar of Eternal Fire that's going to ignite and consume your soul. It doesn't take a humanoid form, but it does have its own (inscrutable) will, desires, and purpose.

Of course, you can feel free to add the appropriate tag for your own local copy as you see fit :-)
