So, v.5 is okay? or the installer is wrong and at least v.6 is needed?

If you currently have your game at version 5, then install the V6 patch, followed by the latest patch which will upgrade it again from V6 to V8.

It is my understanding that the latest patch requires a V6 or 7 base - however I wont be able to confirm that for a week or 2, till Don gets back from hospital.

The v6 patch is still available to download, but the v7 patch is not.
The 2015 patch comment says it includes v7, but does not say it includes v6.

Based on these two clues, I am going to assume that you have to start with v6 or v7 to use this patch.

I checked the patches manually and so far the latest patch has all the files that come with Patch 6, at least I didn't see any files in patch 6 that were not replaced by patch 8 except the manual that had multiple htm files in patch 6 while patch 8 has it all in a single htm file.

So you can go straight from a Version 5 installation to using patch 8.
And so the name "winSPWW2 V6-V8 Consolidation Upgrade." also makes sens as it has the contend of Patch 6 to 8.

FYI there will be a winSPWW2 ver 8.1 version of the consolidation patch issues sometime early May 2015 to correct the issues noted since the ( necessarily.....) hasty release of 8.0 in early April.

When it is ready we will post a notice of it's availability and the changes made
