I think reduced manufacturing capability also played a factor here. They did not want to risk losing the halftracks as using them for moving supplies & personnel hence keeping them "fresh".
Certainly in a book I read (cant remember commanders name) on the Eastern Front they virtually stopped having Mech infantry supporting armour break outs as the halftracks were just to valuable.
