Re: Honor Harrington

IIRC, the point defense can fire (usually) once a turn. If it hasn't fired yet, it will fire as soon as the missiles are in range, whether it be during your turn or the enemy's.

Actually IIRC it can effectively fire as many times or 2x im not sure as there are opponents. I think it reloads after your turn, fires at inbounds, then reloads again. However this may have been a range thing where i sqweezzed (sp?) in two shots and then yeah...

Ya, Proportions' self-defense cannons (SDC) can intercept seekers at range one, as they come in. Their reduced accuracy compared to PDC, and the improved fighters modifiers, mean missiles can be stopped by the SDC or PDC, but fighters can remain a viable weapon even into the late game.

Proportions also has light missile systems, however, which can increase missile rate of fire by up to about 4x by launcher mass (but for less damage per shot).

Although directional shields aren't in SE4, they can be thought to be abstractly included in training. A superior captain could be represented by a ship and/or fleet with high experience levels, leading to a decisive to-hit differential - equivalent to outmaneuvering an enemy, with whatever specific details that requires.

Dumbluck.

You're absolutely right - you should read them.

And you can get a free ebook of the first in the series,
"On Basilisk Station", here:

baen free library

On Basilisk Station [OBS] is not bad, but more to do with establishing politics and characters than ship combat (there is one briefly described simulated fleet engagement, and the climax of the book is a 1 versus 1 combat, although that establishes a lot of the technology and hence tactics.)

Additionally, soon to be added to the free library is "Honor of the Queen" [HOTQ], the second in the series.

Now, if OBS is not bad, HOTQ is awesome. Packed to the gunwhales with action. Deliberate assaults, ambushes, reargaurd actions, and a desperate fight to the finish.

So, for everyone that hasn't read HH, now you know:

a) Why you should.
b) How you can read the first 2 for free.

So "lets be about it"
