Definitely the best way to learn is play the AI. Easy setting. no bonus. large galaxy and 10 AIs ought to do it.

That way you can pick your way through the tech tree. and if you fall behind in something, or research something that you find kind of useless to your game, the AI won't batter you to death for one tiny mistake...as seems to happen in games vs humans.
